Today, PlanetF1 remembers Roger Williamson, who was born on this day in 1948.

A 2x British F3 champion, Williamson was killed at the 1973 Dutch Grand Prix.

In the aftermath, #F1 mandated fireproof clothing for trackside marshals, while drivers vowed to aid at crash sites.

There was a short story written about James Bond meeting Stirling Moss (but it was never published), and a friend of mine has been listening to an audiobook of it that he found, which led me to get this great message.

I just finished reading this book. I nearly cried at work reading over the ending, but it is a must-read to learn more about what a lovely man Piers Courage was ❤️

"Sally, Piers and myself came into a restaurant," says Coombs. "There was a big fish tank on the right. And Jo Schlesser was in the tank going 'Glug, glug' like a fish. Jo came out of the tank, took his trousers off and stood there with nothing on!"

Remembering David Purley, born #OnThisDay 80 years ago. A quick & above all brave man, he started 7 #F1 GPs, his last Dijon ’77 in a Lec CRP1 (pic). He won the George Medal for trying vainly to save his friend Roger Williamson, whose car was on fire, at Zandvoort in ’73.

I was able to pay my respects to Mike today, after all :) A lovely wreath was left by Nigel Webb, owner of the Mike Hawthorn Museum, who kindly showed me around it while researching my dissertation. I also made sure to see Mike's dad's grave as well who rests next to Mike ❤️

I intended to pay my respects at Mike's grave today but had to book the cat a last-minute vet appointment. Still, I have a few posts about Mike scheduled to come out on my Tumblr and Tiktok throughout today in remembrance.

In the 70s, my dad and uncle went to a fair with a few F1 relayed things. My uncle got Graham Hill's autograph, which he kindly gave me a few months ago. My dad instead got to sit in a Lotus. Today, sorting through his belongings he found one thing he got from the fair: this John Player notebook!

I was on a video call with a friend showing off my new Graham Hill book the other day, and when I got to this page, it went a bit like this;

"Oh, look, the dog house charity event that always looked fun."

*zooms in*

"Is that Graham taking off his trousers again??"

1950 – Gilles Villeneuve, born #OnThisDay in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Canada, was one of Formula One’s most thrilling drivers. Known for his exceptional skill behind the wheel, this was highlighted at Watkins Glen where he outpaced others by 11 seconds per lap in wet conditions.
