The Pope is visiting Angola, where 45% of all slave ships departed Africa during the era of the slave trade.
Most of the last voyages in the history of the slave trade - 1850s and 1860s - began in U.S. ports and sailed to Angola for captives.

What are humanities and social sciences research good for? Consider Enslaved.org: putting names to as many of the people trafficked during the Atlantic slave trade as possible. Insisting on the dignity of every human being. #Talkabouthumanities #talkaboutsocialsciences
I will never forget that

Anyone in higher ed will tell you U.S. students learn so much from international students. It’s so good for them to see different ways of thinking and doing things. You know - education.
In a rush but in a class I assigned Townsend‘s Pocahontas book, Miles’ All That She Carried, and Why they Marched - all worked well

A great day to scrap the syllabus and teach Birthright Citizenship
Neat story
My new book on the Declaration of Independence, out in November, is now available for pre-order, which is especially exciting because I still have talks for my previous book over the next few months in MA, TX, NC, TN, NY, CT, NJ, PA, MO, and CA.
That's all well & good, but what if you don't actually understand the real nature of our current problems, because you haven't explored the processes whereby they came into existence?
Also, present-day folks ARE addicted to crap historical analogies, the least we can do is aim for better ones.
Congrats Anna, will definitely by buying and using for my forthcoming!
A pile of Anna O. Law's Migrations and the Origins of American Citizenship and one copy propped up on top. The cover is an USA flag with a figure of a man behind it like the stripes are bars

The memorable thing about school field trips in Northern Ireland in the 90s was they had Protestant schools and Catholics schools go together. It was like that episode of Derry Girls.
Important reminder. Filed mine this morning.
When I emigrated from Ireland about 20 years ago I worked across the street at the SC Historical Society. I naively thought Hibernian Hall would welcome Irish immigrants. But it’s a wealthy social club today - much like it was back then.
Brilliant.
