I'm going to have a pretty busy spring, so if you're in the DC area, stop by and say hi!

Another black clay platter. This one has Spectrum’s Floating Curry. I used some white slip in the center so the glaze would pop more.

Still not sure who will get my vote, but this is super helpful! Exactly what I would expect from local journalism. Thanks!!!
New pasta bowl on brown clay. Glaze is mostly Coyote’s Opal. I added a bit of Amaco’s Honey Flux on the outside to make the glaze edge more fluid since I can’t paint straight glaze lines.

Shallow bowl (about 12 inches across). Glazes are Amaco Deep Sienna Speckle, dots of Spectrums Running Hot Chowder, and then a 2x coating of Blue Rutile.

Thanks!
I add Mason stains to my leftover white clays. Hope to have some out of the kiln in the next week or so.
Thanks!
Thank you!
Thanks!
Wow. Just spectacular.
So pretty! I particularly like the lower right — the interaction of the glaze and texture are terrific.
Not at all! The only issue is making sure the clays have a similar shrink rate. I did a vase with other clays once and they separated because of that.
And you know you’ve been doing it for a while when your back objects to being straight.
Oooh, jealous! Portland has such a wonderful clay community!
What to do with leftover colored clay? Agateware! These are made from the slip and trimmings from the black clay platters I made and some Standard 182 stoneware. I like to keep the outside unglazed because it just feels so nice in the hands.

Love Honey Flux — I buy it by the gallon. Looks great at the bottom!
The folks at Spectrum really liked the SiO black porcelain clay from Spain. I have only seen it for sale online at Blick or The Ceramic Shop. I got a sample of Amaco’s dark chocolate at NCECA. It’s in the bisque now but is supposed to be almost black.
Is that rutile at the bottom?
Oooh. That’s really lovely! I use Firebrick on my dark brown clays but it was far more muted in the black clay. I’m using Imco’s black.

Black clay has become very popular but a lot of glazes just get eaten alive by the clay and if you don’t get the firing schedule right it can bloat or pinhole. But when it comes out, it’s worth the effort.
You should try pottery again!!!
Aww, thanks! And great pin, considering the glaze is Burnt Ember!
I watched a platter demo by Stephen Hill at NCECA in Detroit and now all I can do are platters. My mugs are a mess.😜
Side view!
Oooh, I haven’t tried it on speckled clay! I usually just go with Standard Glossy White on that but it’s not attractive on the black clay. I will try Snow by itself on both!
Finding a glaze that works with black clay is hard. coyote’s new Burnt Ember looks better in person. I added a bit of Amaco Snow around the rim for an accent but it wasn’t really needed.

THIS IS THE SNOW CONTENT I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR!
That’s so cool!!
