Ianto Gruffydd and Mercedes Durham's #BAAP2026 talk is on pre-/l/ breaking (e.g. "Wales" as "Way-uhls") in South East Wales English. Exploring how to operationalize a 'breaking onset point' as the acoustic measure to differentiate between tokens perceived as having breaking and those without.

I wonder if this might indicate that older adults rely more on the visual aspects of speech than younger people?
Studying the McGurk Effect can help clinicians measure how much of an individual's auditory perception is shaped by visual influence. However, studies on this effect in aging adults have proven inconclusive. Learn more in this review! https://pubs.asha.org/doi/10.1044/2025_JSLHR-25-00026

I have to know…. Has anyone ever actually wanted “sticky keys” turned on? And why?
In preparation for the imminent publication of the new edition of my R textbook, the updated interactive tutorials are now available on CRAN. I did a massive re-write last summer, road tested them in my teaching last term, and I’m pretty happy with them. For now. cran.r-project.org/web/packages...
It was wild!
Thanks for the nominations and kind words

Hopefully the likes of Catrin and colleagues will continue their vital work in that direction. My adult SLT colleagues at Wrexham are well placed to supervise if they do. 🤞🏻
This is definitely something I’ve discovered moving to Wales. There is a real dearth of Welsh language resources. I think the starting point is getting normative data. Luckily in paediatrics we have Prosiect Pengwin happening. Hopefully there’ll be more adult resources soon too
In short… no… but it appears that therapists in North Wales tend to assess informally in Welsh.
The development of Welsh Language assessments appears to be high on the agenda given that other minority languages e.g. Basque have translated versions of standardised assessments.

#OnThisDay 2007, the launch of the first Kindle ebook readers. They sold out in 6 hours.
Kindle entered English around 1200 spelled as cundel (to set fire to) probably either from Old Norse kynda (to light a fire), Old Norse kyndill (candle), or Swedish quindla (kindle). 1/2 🧵#etymology
