Late for work because I couldn’t stop typing about the economic realities of open source maintenance on LinkedIn dot com.
TL;DR: stipends won’t save us. What worked out of post-Sunburst funding (similar spike to Mythos) was full-time jobs that supported security work long term.

Are these health benefits cause we usually end up jogging and drinking espresso? 🤔
I really enjoy seeing them; please keep ‘em coming :)
I don’t think wool flats are very good for racking and stacking…
I’m working to standardize how we do community working groups/office hours at @roost.tools, including the nitty gritty like:
• scheduling/reminders
• agenda sharing
• notetaking
• noting/following up on action items
Community peeps, what are YOUR tips? What tools are clutch? What should we avoid?
"The open secret of child safety is that no one can say how well [CSAM detection models] work...When we cannot know what these systems work well for, who they are failing, and where there are gaps that may be augmented in other ways, we risk harming those who are most vulnerable online."
If you're an open source lover and infrastructure person (aka were roaming the halls of #KubeCon or will find all the storage and data pipeline talks at #ATmosphereConf), @roost.tools is looking for you!
We've got fully remote, Infrastructure Engineering roles now open: roost.tools/infrastructu...
Imagining Copilot rejection notices..."You opted in, but we're opting out. We don't want this yaml-to-ical generator for meetings you had 10+ years ago. Here's 20% off an Octocat plushy."
Greyhound dog hiding in a pile of blankets. Only the dog’s nose is visible.
Part two: face of a dog who was made to go out in the downpour instead of getting a UTI.
Close up of greyhound dog wrapped in a fuzzy blanket
This is the face of a dog who can hear the downpour outside and would rather get a UTI than leave his blanket nest for that.
Paul that was just @jcsalterego.bsky.social. Pick up.
We call this "House Bucks," in which we only speak of home repairs in denominations of 1,000 to make us feel better.
"Eh, having to unexpectedly rewire this entire part of the house isn't so bad -- only 10 housebucks!"
Clearly the ferry system’s upcoming public wifi pilot needs riveting in-depth coverage, and that can only be done with a souvenir boat in hand…
As a former Googler I’m like, “yes, this workflow makes sense for hundreds of thousands of user logs.” But then when I try to see who from study group shared which document with a non member WHYYYYYYYYYY
We hear a lot of, "I really just need..." when we ask developers about their platform safety challenges. While some are platform-specific (so won't be shared w/o permission), so many are universal requests.
We started a "safety tools wishlist" for more ideas and upvotes: github.com/orgs/roostor...
Who knew all the chat bots needed a Sabbath mode…
There is only one correct answer to this question: “The thing about Arsenal is they always try to walk it in.”
Hiring a sysadmin and SRE to keep up the Jira instance I doodled myself sounds…awful. Seems like you could make some money hosting and managing that overhead…
The “digital plumbing for safety” is fairly similar across application types. That’s what ROOST is building and why I think there’s so much promise in shared open source foundations for this.
Rules vary, but there’s definitely something to be found in sharing between similarly-shaped communities!
In broad strokes, online safety takes rules plus tools. Rules being what’s acceptable in what community, what in (dis)incentives create that behavior, plus the relevant legal requirements for that platform. Then there’s what technical tooling makes it possible. That’s more akin to digital plumbing…
A lot of good conversations at #GDC2026 about what game developers are struggling with in making safe play experiences and protecting their users ❤️
Oh no no no, no brakes and turning left at 20-43 degrees was more my jam. You #crossiscoming people get so much dirt in your gear.
These days though it starts with b and ends with n. It's a mystery!
I was going to do the normal, 'Hi congrats welcome' but then I saw the OBRA tent in your profile photo and we have way more to talk about!
(But also welcome and congrats)
At #GDC next week with safety on your mind? Come find me for a chat about the open source tools we've built at @roost.tools for harms like abusive behavior, anti-cheat and fraud, and child safety.
I don't have a lot of swag, but free software for better gaming is a pretty good giveaway.
Thinking of myself as “golden retriever puppy” is much better branding than “stressed out woman of a certain age.”
The problem with Masters sports is that you get better, but your body gets older.
Had my best ski race ever this weekend, but today I can barely lift the coffee to my face.
The fun part about open source is you can check out what you'd be working on right now, or swing by the Discord or a working group meeting and see what working here would be like: github.com/roostorg
If you were laid off from Block (or anywhere) and want to stay remote, @roost.tools is hiring for multiple SWE roles and levels.
If you're the kind of person who's deeply satisfied by figuring out why a service has multiple databases and ripping some out, we might be for you! roost.tools/careers
I have a business profile and nope, you can only search for people open to volunteering and hiring. I think you have to have the special LinkedIn for Recruiters package for that one...It's super frustrating as someone who's just a regular hiring person.
