New from @maanvisingh.bsky.social and I: What does the first few months of immigration enforcement look like under Trump - more arrests, more local police cooperation, more fear.

Our two papers on abortion bans and fertility/infant mortality are now out.
In 14 states w/ abortion bans, fertility increased 1.7% and infant mortality increased 6%.
Key takeaway is that these impacts were disproportionately felt among those w/ greatest structural disadvantages.

Holy crap. The DOJ is arguing that the President can unilaterally deport anyone he wants without ANY statutory authority, just on his inherent authority as President over national security.
That is a terrifying claim to make and not one that has ever been recognized before in US history.

Below is a thread of federal government data being taken down this week. 🧵
It’s a growing list. Feel free to add others I’ve missed.

In 1993, the Supreme Court said that immigration court proceedings are “domestic procedures ” which are not relevant outside the United States, specifically as relates to people detained at Guantánamo Bay. So I just can’t see how it would be legal to use Gitmo for “domestic” ICE detention purposes.
Something I'd note is that, while there are pretty much no details or useful information of any kind in this Guantanamo "memo," a _conspicuously_ absent detail is the number of migrants they expect it to hold.
Which means the only source we have for the 30K number is...Trump.
Excited to share my new article in @sfjournal.bsky.social ! Using a survey experiment with 995 families, I show how race shapes beliefs about school safety. White, Asian, and Latine families perceive Black schools as less safe—even when safety ratings are identical. #Education #Race

The birthright citizenship executive order requires the federal government to issue, or recognize, documents affirming the US citizenship of babies born in the US after mid-Feb 2025, only if at least one parent is a US citizen or green card holder. (Notably, a temporary visa isn’t enough.)

Where to find legal aid assistance:
A list of organizations accredited by the DOJ is here: www.justice.gov/eoir/recogni...
A directory of immigrant-serving legal aid (searchable by zip code; updated by Justicia Lab and Probono.net) is here: www.immigrationlawhelp.org
New paper on donations to immigrant-serving legal aid. We track donations to immigrant-serving legal aid nonprofits with DOJ accreditation over time. We find a dramatic rise in financial contributions to these organizations during Trump's first election.

We're constantly fed a narrative of unlimited numbers of *potential* immigrants.
The truth is, by a long way, most people stay put.
And if they do move, they move within the borders of their country.
And if they do leave, they go next door.
And if policy allows it, they tend to go back again, too.
“Immigration Impact” regularly helps keep me up to date on what’s going on, where we’ve been, and where we may be headed:
Dear LC comunidad y familia,
