Had a cracking game of Spearhead the other night for AoS. I still love this format - tactical, fun and fair. I can’t credit the Warhammer Studio designers enough.

It took a fair amount of Orks to take down a Nemesis Dreadknight in a recent game of #WH40K. You can practically hear my Deff Dredd screaming “Dat all you got?!” as he stares at the crumpled ruins.

Next piece of Kill Team terrain off the production line. The ruined manufactorum terrain has been around for a while, but I really like the Volkus colour scheme and it gives me a chance to play around with some new techniques.

Hmm. Heavily used I agree, but it’s still a bit of an everyday word for me! I was just listening to Hammerhal by Justin Hill and the word “ichor” got used 4 times in a paragraph… 😅

Images from last week’s game of Warhammer 40,000 at the Chelmsford Bunker. The Orks pulled off a rare crushing victory over the slithery Death Guard!

@theblacklibrarian.bsky.social What do you think are some particularly “Black Library” words used regularly, but uncommon in everyday conversation?

I’ll start us off with “inexorable”, “ichor” and “susurration” 😅

At what point does a game shift from “multiple mistakes” to “cheating”?

When he was corrected he never tried to argue it, just conceded that he was wrong - but about almost everything.

As I reflect on it, I’m sure he was trying to just have me over and it leaves a bitter taste in the mouth.

If it were a new player, you’d chalk it up to inexperience. But that wasn’t the case here. This was someone claiming to be a competitive AoS veteran, who was trying to lecture me on the rules - wrongly. Fortunately I could check the Idoneth Deepkin on the AoS app as it isn’t yet behind a paywall.

- He kept rolling the wrong number of attacks

- He claimed abilities that don’t exist

- He mixed up Fight abilities, Shoot abilities and Charge abilities

- “Wholly within” had to be explained multiple times for his faction terrain abilities

- His army was 1220 points, not 1200 as agreed. Mine was 1140.

- He set up his tankiest unit with the wrong number of models (4, not 3)

- He wrongly tried to claim his first two battle tactics

- He tried to claim cover with flying units

- He thought Heal could bring units back from the dead

Last night I played an opponent in AoS Matched Play who said that he was a competitive tournament player. I’m relatively new, only picking up the game in the last year.

Idoneth vs Skaven

It was a complete shitshow, and I’ve never played an opponent so poor with the rules.

Roughly in order:

It also tells you to base miniatures in Astrogranite or Stirland Mud - even if they don’t have bases.

I really think the Citadel app could be so much better. It’s particularly galling that it’s “wrong” even on their latest models.

It’s an app with very little care or attention to detail.

“Burgundy”, as a colour, is often suggested to be Khorne Red, highlighted by Wazdakka Red and Squig Orange. This will not give you a maroon effect.

Unfortunately the only way to know for sure is to check several sources and rely on your own experience.

Unfortunately it means that beginners can’t expect to replicate exactly what they see on the box by following the app that purports to tell them what to do. Instead, the app has standard triads (e.g. Caliban Green always being highlighted by Warpstone Glow and Moot Green) that often aren’t “right”.

The “correct” green here would be Sons of Horus Green, as they advise on their YouTube tutorial. You will frequently find that the app and videos say two completely different things. I also note that the tutorials often push Contrast Paints quite heavily too; they’re a matter of personal taste.

That will give you something more akin to the warpstone effect seen with Skaven. It’s a classic triad, but you’ll end up with a very nuclear green.

I’m increasingly finding the Citadel App to be way off for colours that resemble “official” GW schemes. Take this example for the Volkus terrain - the door.

The app states a base of Caliban Green, shaded of Nuln Oil, then highlighted Warpstone Glow and Moot Green.

But that won’t look like this!

Latest off the production line is this Warboss in Mega Armour… or should that be WAAAAAAAGH! Boss?

I’m used to seeing beautifully painted miniatures, but can I get a shoutout for the unsung heroes making terrain for their clubs so that we have beautiful boards to play on as well?

Here’s my work in progress Sanctum Administratus - been going at this for about 3 weeks now!

They’ve been pretty good with Necromunda and Blood Bowl over the years, recognising the fan base kept those games alive - so much so that GW brought both of them back into print.

WH Quest (of sorts) is already back in Blackstone Fortress and Cursed City, so I’d say it’s definitely a possibility.

I wondered if they’d re-do Mordheim as a skirmish game to accompany the Old World. WH40K has Kill Team, AoS has Warcry…

Managed a victory playing the Volatile Assets scenario from last month’s White Dwarf, even though my opponent tried to be a bit sneaky and “accidentally” used a 1200pt army in a 1000pt game.

I enjoyed this one last week (it’s also great to see Blood Bowl getting some White Dwarf love) as I really can identify with coming back to Warhammer after my own almost-25 year absence. I love what’s happening with the hobby these days.

It must be difficult to keep coming up with shows with a relatively small team & production budget, but the love of all things Warhammer really comes through in what you guys do 😊

It’s great! I’ve really enjoyed the new shows added to Warhammer TV, and Scrap Demon has been great.

Great book Justin - I already own a copy, but I’ve almost finished another of yours. Terminal Overkill (via Audible) has been an absolute classic. I love Necromunda as a setting and your vision of the Hive has been a tour de force, brought wonderfully to life by Emma Noakes’ narration.

I had a browse online and everything I read post-game talked about how this is a much-spammed army list in AoS 4th Ed at the moment. Most people also seem to agree; it’s totally unbalanced at the moment.

Personally, I won’t bother playing against Nighthaunt again. It just isn’t fun.
