Great piece on the recent social media spat btwn ROK and Israel. What’s noteworthy is not only the rise of ROK’s social media diplomacy under the LJM admin but also FM Cho Hyun’s response that LJM’s tweets are “an extension of ROK’s national identity.” ROK’s digital diplomacy era has begun.
I have a short piece on how Canada should think about retaliation in the age of Trump.

I’m less interested in *why* Lee criticized the Israeli govt on social media but more in the effects on or consequences for ROK’s relations with others, incl. Japan. Linking Israel’s HR violations to the comfort women issue ahead of a summit with Takaichi is interesting (but not necessarily wrong).
But another observation wrt LJM admin’s diplomatic corps is the rise in the use of social media. I’m no longer on X but still on Facebook and FM Cho Hyun posts regularly there for official purposes. Dip social media posts used to be more institutional under MOFA for instance, not individualized.
Criticisms from the opposition (conservatives) expectedly pointed out the risk of escalating diplomatic tensions and frictions with Israel. My thought process is that if this escalates enough it could cause repercussions for ROK-US relations.
I can’t recall in my recent memory the last time a South Korean president took to *social media* to condemn another government for human rights violations and then going back and forth to defend the criticism. Some in the diplomatic corps are defending Lee’s comments, calling for Israel amb’s recall
