I started coaching HS girls in 1981. After 4yrs of success the AD sat me down to let me know that I had proven myself and he offered me the boys position. The offer seemed so demeaning to the girls. I declined and continued coaching the girls for another 30yrs.

I will definitely give it a listen. I find both Amby and George easy to talk to.

At Sunday's #HoustonMarathon? 49 year-old Dot McMahan will attempt to qualify for her 6th USA Olympic Marathon Trials (she must run 2:37:00 or better). She'll be part of an OTQ pace group led by 2024 Trials winner Fiona O'Keeffe.

2025
363 days of supporting our sport.
1 day of celebrating my daughters wedding.
168 days at home in my own bed.
196 days out of town.
Enjoyed almost all of it. What I didn’t enjoy I learned from.
When do you get too old to not get exited for what’s next?

I hate this so much. Zika and Pete (and Andy) have believed in DEVELOPMENT from the beginning. It was never about signing the top athlete out of College. It was about turning hard working, blue collar athletes into top athletes. We need more Zap Fitness programs not less.

Just want to mention (again!) what an inspiring athlete Dot McMahan of Hansons Brooks ODP is.

In February, 2024 she finished her 5th Olympic Trials Marathon, and last Saturday she won the #Crim10Mile for the 2nd straight year in 55:48.

That's 5:35/mi pace for 10 miles for a 48 year-old woman.

Interestingly Bernard Lagat finishing 2nd in a Kenyan kit was a US citizen at the time of this race. He became a US citizen on May 7, 2004.

I’m not trying to create any beef but Mercier Scoring tables says that 13:58 for 5000 is equivalent to 4:04 in the Mile. That was run with legal shoes. It was run on gun time. It was without male pacers running her all the way to the finish line. Just saying. That was special.

Although most people strive for easy.
Difficult provides a much greater sense of satisfaction.

In the past week I’ve had 3 coaches reach out to me about dealing with parents, administration, and other coaches.
I told all 3 of them the same thing.
None of us began coaching for the parents, the administration, or other coaches. Just remember, we do it for the athletes.

Amy Davis-Green of @hansonsrun.bsky.social finished second at last year's #Delightful5K in Albany, NY, but this year she's running 12 weeks pregnant.

"Right now my body is slowly changing, and kind of like embracing the new changes," she said.

I would like to create an annual DEVELOPMENT AWARD for the top Collegiate program that is developing athletes.
In the age of limited spots on a roster, and buying ready made plug and play athletes, coaches that still believe in development deserve recognition.
Help me with ideas?

Distance running improvement (development) requires time and consistency. This is true with beginners as well as pro level runners.
The process deserves to be recognized and celebrated, not just the results.

This is my point exactly.

The horrible numbers in the 90s was the motivation for why Hansons-Brooks Distance Project began.

If an athlete has an NIL deal and you are unaware of it, then the NIL is not doing what it was intended to do.

I volunteer for the job (that does not exist).
I do not want to be paid and will pay for all of my own travel so that there would be greater $$ for the athletes.

The current system is set up where the highest paid people are those in charge. The athletes are the show and should be paid accordingly

Brooks-Hansons Original Distance Project and Brooks Running will continue as partners through at least 2028.

"Brooks understood that creating competitive marathoners takes years and they have always supported the journey," said @hansonsrun.bsky.social in a news release.

USATF will not have a 2025 edition of the LA Grand Prix at USATF.

Instead, they just announced they’ll work w/ Sound Running and combine their efforts around Track Fest on May 24th at Occidental College. It will be a World Athletics silver label event featuring races from the 800m to the 10,000m.

Great analogy. Removing Storm Thurmond’s name from any record is a positive.

I love when I see a professional athlete or coach choose a contract worth less money.
It proves that they understand that sometimes there are things more important than money.

Heading to SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO with 3 athletes all excited to participate in THE TEN. 5 years ago
Sound Running recognized that there were limited opportunities for Pro runners to run a quality 10,000 so in an attempt to save the event THE TEN was born. Our sport thanks you.

Always fun to run Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle. A victory for Amy Davis Green in 25:31. She led the charges in the Coed Division with a team victory. We also won the Women’s division.
