A decade ago, a Sweetgreen Kale Caesar cost $9 in New York. Today it's $14. The problem is that it still looks and tastes like a $9 salad.
SG isn't as good as it was, or as it could be. I wrote about why — and whether years of self-inflicted mediocrity are fixable: newconsumer.com/2026/02/has-...

Thank you!
Always an honor and a treat to appear on The Talk Show. Thanks, @gruber.foo! daringfireball.net/linked/2025/...

Why? It's more than a discount (though that helps) and good ads.
I love how this company builds itself WITH its members — something you can only do with this level of care and control.
Yep, but also not typing much (and wasn't before)

One of the best things I’ve done lately is ditch the iPad Pro keyboard cover.
Weighs SO MUCH LESS, delightfully thin, more fun to use (so I use it more).
The trackpad was funny when it was new, but this OS has no business being clicked. And now iPad disappears in a bag.
You can hover over the chart on this post @newconsumer.com to see how each item scores overall, plus some fascinating demographic cuts: newconsumer.com/2025/05/cons...
We asked thousands of US consumers to rate 96 food and beverage items, from almond butter to whiskey, on:
- Their overall healthiness (or unhealthiness), and
- How happy (or unhappy) it makes them feel to eat or drink them
Here are the results.

Substack has also built some network effects, which are rare in media. And it has a large, engaged audience that values written content, which is also rare these days.
But in that time, Substack has built a lot of tools and features, some of which are interesting. I wouldn't want many of them on my site, but I'm curious how they might fit in as community features or growth drivers.
It's been almost 6 years since I launched The New Consumer, and specifically chose not to use Substack, for several reasons. I'm still very happy with that decision!
I'm trying something new as an experiment: Running @newconsumer.com in parallel on Substack, and treating it as much like a social network as a publishing platform.
