My thoughts on the closing of Hampshire College

"If we cease being mysteries to one another, we cease regarding ourselves and the other as a liberal subject — we parrot the principles, but we don’t defend violations of them"

If this were a company that made potato chips, it would be troubling.... if it's a cybersecurity company that has the capacity to actualy scan for those who advocate for "dysfunctional and regressive" cultures... that's more like a nightmare fever dream...

It's ironic that some with an ideology characterized by the importance of tradition and authority reject a core doctrine of Catholicism without even giving a set of reasons.... At least nail some theses to the door of a church or something 😁 suggests we are becoming a post-ideological ppl.

Feels like a triumph of aesthetics over reason when Catholics can reject papal authority based on vibes... No theological argument... Just hot takes..

The Incels Are Taking Over Anti-feminism best explains populism.

Must read from @seva.bsky.social about the power of modernity causing a "fallen masculilinty".. a narrative that underpins populist politics.... I think a lot about what an alternative "politics of dignity" looks like than can combat this narrative....

Palantir CEO says working at his $316 billion software company is better than a degree from Harvard or Yale: ‘No one cares about the other stuff’ | Fortune Sorry, Apple, Google, and OpenAI, Palantir’s billionaire boss, Alex Karp, says a job at his AI firm is the “best credential in tech.”

"that other stuff" probably includes deep analysis and reflection on whether we should indiscriminantly surveil fellow human beings

Someone just told me that The Princess Bride is "overrated" and long story short it's perfectly acceptable to remove toxic people from your life.

I spoke with someone who wondered about the shame of using AI for work, offloading their writing and some thinking to the machine. Really worth a listen, especially as one slightly more distant from academic conversations on the topic.

What Happens When Students Stop Believing Their Work Matters A maxim I’ve oft repeated for our AI era is that if a task can be automated, then it will.

This is really good... It mirrors a suspicion I've been having about students changing perceptions of what it means to "do the work" in college... I detect a growing sense among some students that "it doesn't matter if I read or not"...

It's entirely possible that words don't matter. That realists were right after all and "might makes right" and it doesn't matter how the American president talks especially to thuggish theocratic regimes. But my feeling is that an important "bright line" has been crossed and there's no going back.

too many ppl don't get that a world leader even offering this as an empty threat is dangerous because at some point, they are going to have to carry it out (at least some of it) to retain credibility.

1 week ago 6 1 0 0

It also seems as if he has to hold out the possibility of carrying out at least some of the threat if he ever wants any other nation to that him seriously again ... That's why it's so irresponsible to make a statement like this in the first place...

This might be the most irresponsible thing an American president has ever said in public....

Is this the beginning of the end of the US petrodollar system?

The "tin foil hat" side of me thinks this is a headfake... I think Trump ultimately wants to put pressure on Europe to clean up the Straits of Hormuz mess... leave the petrodollar system/weaken the dolar, delink from the global oil market and rely on domestic regional sources.. but I could be wrong.
