My thoughts on the closing of Hampshire College
"If we cease being mysteries to one another, we cease regarding ourselves and the other as a liberal subject — we parrot the principles, but we don’t defend violations of them"

Great schism two? Papal boogaloo
Leo Strauss would be so confused if he came back to life
If this were a company that made potato chips, it would be troubling.... if it's a cybersecurity company that has the capacity to actualy scan for those who advocate for "dysfunctional and regressive" cultures... that's more like a nightmare fever dream...
Here @nilsgilman.bsky.social, a historian who spent years working in Silicon Valley, makes the case that a liberal arts education will be ~more~ valuable in the near future www.noemamag.com/why-a-libera...
It's ironic that some with an ideology characterized by the importance of tradition and authority reject a core doctrine of Catholicism without even giving a set of reasons.... At least nail some theses to the door of a church or something 😁 suggests we are becoming a post-ideological ppl.
Feels like a triumph of aesthetics over reason when Catholics can reject papal authority based on vibes... No theological argument... Just hot takes..
Wait.... Hear him out 😁
agree...
Must read from @seva.bsky.social about the power of modernity causing a "fallen masculilinty".. a narrative that underpins populist politics.... I think a lot about what an alternative "politics of dignity" looks like than can combat this narrative....

"that other stuff" probably includes deep analysis and reflection on whether we should indiscriminantly surveil fellow human beings
Yeah.. supports the theory that ppl mostly keep the party affiliation they adopt when they are in their teens and early twenties.
Apparently America was "great" in 1987 🙄
Someone just told me that The Princess Bride is "overrated" and long story short it's perfectly acceptable to remove toxic people from your life.
Great stuff Mel!! I think lots of folks are struggling with the same issue as your guest is... Thanks for initiating the conversation!!
I spoke with someone who wondered about the shame of using AI for work, offloading their writing and some thinking to the machine. Really worth a listen, especially as one slightly more distant from academic conversations on the topic.

Podcast graphic for Tech Policy Press: "What to Do If the AI Bubble Bursts" by Justin Hendrix
I spoke to Asad Ramzanali from the Vanderbilt Policy Accelerator for Political Economy and Regulation about his new report, "After the AI Crash," which argues that if the AI bubble bursts it will represent a significant policy opportunity for tech reform. This is really good... It mirrors a suspicion I've been having about students changing perceptions of what it means to "do the work" in college... I detect a growing sense among some students that "it doesn't matter if I read or not"...
Thanks for the shout 😊
So excited about this podcast! @adambecker.bsky.social is such a great guest on so many podcasts, now he's got his own.
Hopefully he has @josemarichal.bsky.social on his list of guests to discuss, You Must Become an Algorithmic Problem!
It's entirely possible that words don't matter. That realists were right after all and "might makes right" and it doesn't matter how the American president talks especially to thuggish theocratic regimes. But my feeling is that an important "bright line" has been crossed and there's no going back.
too many ppl don't get that a world leader even offering this as an empty threat is dangerous because at some point, they are going to have to carry it out (at least some of it) to retain credibility.
It also seems as if he has to hold out the possibility of carrying out at least some of the threat if he ever wants any other nation to that him seriously again ... That's why it's so irresponsible to make a statement like this in the first place...
This might be the most irresponsible thing an American president has ever said in public....
Today I learned, I'm a birthright citizen
The "tin foil hat" side of me thinks this is a headfake... I think Trump ultimately wants to put pressure on Europe to clean up the Straits of Hormuz mess... leave the petrodollar system/weaken the dolar, delink from the global oil market and rely on domestic regional sources.. but I could be wrong.
😂
I suppose they can say to Saudi's "if your want our help, buy more of our weapons"
