Building the necessary trust takes time and we appreciate everyone’s patience as we continue working together with partner agencies and community-based organizations to address people’s needs and concerns.
These agencies and organizations have reached out to them to offer them services. Our top priority is the safety of all Astorians — including unhoused Astorians.
My office is working closely with the Department of Social Services, Department of Homeless Services, Queens Community Board 1, and community-based organizations, including Breaking Ground, to reach out to our neighbors living in the encampment on 30th Ave and Steinway.

To bring our vision for a just New York for all to fruition, the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations must pay what they owe. We continue to demand that the Governor listen to New Yorkers and Tax the Rich. Our goal is to achieve a budget that supports working-class New Yorkers and does not cut the services they rely on. We appreciate that the Council budget seeks creative solutions to closing the budget deficit. We are also encouraged that the Mayor and Speaker are both working towards a balanced budget that maintains essential programs for New Yorkers. As we enter the next phase of budget negotiations, we look forward to working with the Speaker and Mayor towards a budget that delivers a more affordable, liveable, and safe city for all New Yorkers.

Wishing everyone celebrating today Chag Pesach Sameach! This holiday prompts all of us to recommit to pursuing liberation and justice. May you celebrate this holiday of freedom with loved ones, rest, and delicious food.
Just today, the Supreme Court struck another blow against queer liberation by legalizing so-called “conversion therapy” in Colorado.
We will keep fighting until our trans siblings are not only safe but also free to live joyous lives.
This Trans Day of Visibility, I’m celebrating trans New Yorkers as they continue to exist, resist, and find joy as those in power try to push them further into the margins and strip away their basic rights.

New Yorkers deserve solutions that meaningfully address hate violence — not political theater & half-measures.
Instead of voting to pass unserious & anti-democratic “buffer zone” bills, @council.nyc.gov should invest $26-30 million in evidence-based non-carceral hate violence prevention. Read why:

New York Post headline reading: Four lefty NYC pols subpoenaed in GOP colleague's free-speech suit to explain about their racist remarks about conservatives
An extremist MAGA colleague just subpoenaed me and other progressive council members in a baseless political lawsuit designed to intimidate us.
Let me be clear: I will not be bullied out of fighting for working people, democracy, and justice.
“Today’s announcement is a vital step towards making New York City safer by investing in caring, empirically-driven solutions that support strong neighborhoods rather than the failed practice of relying on police to respond to every societal ill. Our communities have long known the true sources of safety - addressing poverty, mental health, substance use, and getting to the root causes of conflict and violence before they escalate.
Renita Francois has been at the forefront of the movement for a holistic approach that drives safety, not mass punishment and incarceration. I'm eager to work with her and the mayor to build out a robust Office of Community Safety that enacts a framework that gives people and our communities access to the safety we all deserve.”

To the transgender community: our commitment remains firm. We will keep fighting like hell alongside you for your right to healthcare. To New York’s healthcare providers and government: hold the line. Do not acquiesce to this cruelty. Protect our people and our state.
NYU Langone: shame on you for bending the knee to the Trump Administration and closing the Transgender Youth Health Program. It is a disturbing violation of the Hippocratic Oath (First, Do No Harm) to cancel care that is proven to save lives. All major medical associations agree: gender affirming care is lifesaving healthcare that improves the physical health, mental health, and wellbeing of transgender youth. Removing access to gender affirming care leads to higher rates of anxiety, depression, and suicide attempts among transgender youth.
Shame on NYU Langone for bending the knee to the Trump administration and closing the Transgender Youth Health Program 🏳️⚧️✊🏽
Soccer belongs to everyone. But often, the institutions and elites behind the sport build walls where there should be open fields. We want to welcome the world — but not at the expense of our people and planet.

A member of our community tragically lost their life yesterday in a fire at 31-10 35th Street. Another member of our community was critically injured. On behalf of our entire neighborhood, we extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones. We are praying for a swift recovery for our neighbor in critical condition. Our thoughts are with all those impacted by this devastating loss. We are grateful to the FDNY firefighters, EMTs, first responders, and city agencies who responded swiftly to this incident. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by FDNY Fire Marshals. Our office will continue to share updates with the community as more information becomes available.
Neighbors: please stay safe. We lost a community member last night to a deadly fire, and another is in critical condition. My full statement is below. Find FDNY fire safety resources here: www.nyc.gov/site/fdny/ed...
