For family historians, these records reveal hidden stories of relationships, hardship and social pressure — rare glimpses into lives otherwise sparsely recorded.
To avoid supporting mother and child, parish officials used bastardy bonds to identify the father and compel him to pay for the child’s upkeep. If he refused, the case could go to court or even lead to imprisonment.
This newly catalogued document shows he was even sentenced to three months’ hard labour — a reminder of how seriously these cases were treated.
What exactly was a bastardy bond?
Children labelled “illegitimate” had no automatic rights to their father’s name, inheritance or financial support.
