WOW. I'm in awe. You all are just brilliant — you've absolutely nailed US culture, and in less than 48 hours in a non-native language! Pitch-perfect. 11/10 no notes.
It must suck to "work" for the NYT instead of the Guardian. HERE'S how every article about this asshole should start: "Charlie Kirk, far-right commentator and [Trump] ally, was killed ... doing what he was known for [...] – making incendiary and often racist and sexist comments to large audiences."
So many things to make a copy editor and/or proofreader cringe, but those hyphens instead of em dashes in the second and third paragraphs are just sloppy, especially since the fourth and fifth paragraphs DO use em dashes.
PEALS of laughter. Absolute PEALS.
At least he's not wearing a ridiculously long bright red tie?
Apparently not.
So they're admitting that they've made an entire barn full of mistakes?
When you've got *Pete Buttigieg* dropping F-bombs, you done f*cked AAAAALLLLLL the way up.
Wow — when you've lost Peter Doocy...
I was vaccinated, but at age 13/14 I had a VIOLENT cough that lasted for months and sounded *exactly* like whooping cough. I coughed so hard I fell out of chairs. I went to a doctor (rural AR), but I didn't have an attack in the doctor's office, so they said it was "just a cough." It was AWFUL.
This is one of those rare posts that works even better with the typo ("ethic" s/b "ethnic").
Not a radio program, but @jefftiedrich.bsky.social's delightfully profane newsletter makes me laugh every day. The many ways he refers to Trump, etc. are GOLD — "burst trash bag of personality defects and pathologies," "Sundowning Grandpa Befuddlepants," "gibbering loon," "blithering dipshit."
Due to the BlueSky video limit, I needed to edit the video, but here’s a link to the OG post on TikTok if you’d like to see it.

Do me a favor—share this quick explainer by @reeciecolbert.bsky.social with folks ‘confused’ about the LAFD budget cut and its impact on the fires.
Spoiler: the “budget cut” was covered by an overrun. Translation? The department didn’t run out of money—they spent far more than originally approved.
Here in Germany, drivers on major highways form a "Rettungsgasse" or "saving alley" when traffic slows below ~10 km/h. Drivers in the left lane stay as far left as they can, and those in the right lane (or lanes) stay to the right.
The German word is literally Handschuhe (hand shoes). Other fun German words:
vacuum cleaner — Staubsauger (dust sucker)
light bulb — Glühbirne (glow pear)
sexual intercourse — Geschlechtsverkehr (sex traffic)
match — Streichholz (prank wood)
True, there clearly not mistakes per say ;-)
But clearly you'll avoid doing the same thing with spelling. Gotta keep the conspiracy theorists guessing.

Literally (not figuratively) started laughing out loud at this 😂
I was just thinking about the candlestick salad recently. I'm still shocked that the recipe (complete with picture) made it into the Friend in the first place — I mean, Packer was still alive in 2008! I'm impressed that you're the reason it's no longer available on the website 😂 😂 😂
Huh, odd... Mine shows this whether I have the keyboard set to English (US), German, or Spanish. 🤷♀️ But I might have started using a non-default keyboard at some point and just don't remember anymore.
(I misspoke above — the name of the letter Ð/ð is eth, not theta [θ]. Theta is the IPA symbol for the sound that Þ/þ makes.)
(And to þink ∂at I so often complain about German being needlessly complicated.)
You're welcome! (Ðough... as a not-yet-recovering pedant, I feel compelled to point out ∂at your first Þ above should be a Ð/∂. And actually if you use Þ you're asking folks to pronounce the first sound in your pronouns like the "th" in "thin" instead of "they"...)
Literally all ∂at you have to do is long-press the T on any phone keyboard wiþ Roman letters and the option becomes available — ? (For theta, long-press D.)
WTF?!?! I've loved NPR since childhood, when my family listened to Michael Feldman's "Whad'Ya Know?" on Sundays. But this take is absolutely awful. RFK Jr.'s views on vaccines (among other things) are not "controversial"; they're anti-scientific. Please do NOT normalize the incoming administration.
