Knives are the currency
of young boys

and father, forever
the salesman, hands you
a Walmart sack stuffed with whittlers
all folded into cheap
nylon fiber handles, blades
concealed by visions
of eagles screeching

of does at calm unaware
how soon their skin will split
from the stinging touch
of clearance bin steel.

For years, @eldiagram.bsky.social has been my dream journal, and I finally published with them!

I have two new poems in the latest issue and I’m so, so, so happy about it πŸ’•

This is an excerpt from the first piece, inspired by Zelda trading quests.

"User Options" by Noah Kucij:

Do you want to give Hallow
permission to use your location?

Do you want Hallow running
in the background while you sleep?

Hallow has detected the following
devices nearby: old telephone
booth, white oak stand, grazing
array of rabbits.

Hallow wants to access the following:
images, objects, notions, certain slants
of light, blind curves, rapt silences.

Hallow is set as the default
program to run when you encounter
headlights scrambled up a slope, pages
the sudden wind flips through, bare
necklines, bourbon, lone crows. Do you
want to change this setting?

The bedside lamp or another housewife soon joined the idylliIc storybook nook of the cozy stove in betraying its owner. Instead of bringing light, it brought to light at loudspeaker volume everything she said in bed:

The lamp was speaking in a loud, shrill voice, like a military officer. At first I thought I would just turn it off and stay safe and sound in the dark. But then I told myself that that wouldn't help. I rushed to see my friend, who owned a dream-interpretation manual, and I looked up "Lamp": the only definition in the book was "Serious illness." It was a big relief, but only for a moment, until I remembered that nowadays, to be safe, people were using "sickness" as a code word for "arrest." Again I felt desperately worried,

The nightmare objects in the dreams of those in 1930s Germany struck me as too mundane when I read Charlotte Beradt’s The Third Reich of Dreamsβ€”the lamp that tells one woman’s secrets, for instance.

Delighted to start the year with a poem in the new issue of Diagram!

I wrote this one several years ago about police shootings, which is only timely again now because we have a police killing people problem that makes it always timely. *heavy sigh*

Enjoy!

I absolutely loved Anney Bolgiano's "Flat-Pack," a chapbook that @eldiagram.bsky.social published a couple years back. Anney combines IKEA visual instructions with rearrangements of Marcus Aurelius. It's marvellous.
