I think he had to quit that diet, for health reasons.

Praise the Lord from the earth, you great sea creatures & all ocean depths, lightning & hail, snow & clouds, stormy winds that do his bidding, you mountains & all hills, fruit trees & all cedars, wild animals & all cattle, small creatures & flying birds, kings of the earth & all nations
Ps. 148:7-14

The helicopter had requested visual separation after acknowledging that they'd seen the aircraft. That means the responsibility to avoid collision was primarily on the pilot at that point due to the proximity of the two aircraft.

Nah, the legislative branch gave the tariff power away. The trade expansion act gave the power to unilaterally enact tariffs for national security reasons. During his first term, there was noise about changing the law, but they never did.

Yeah, neither one of these is likely to be due to Trump. His policies haven't had time to take effect and make an impact on safety. They won't help the situation, but they're not the cause.

I feel like the extremely Conservative anti-Francis Catholics are still a minority. I'm in a conservative diocese and I know just about everyone in my parish is more conservative than me, but no one makes space for anti-Francis foolishness.

I understand that choice. I'd probably go Episcopalian if my husband agreed. Instead I just focus on Francis and on my local parish.

Now they're going after PBS and NPR.

I mean, it takes mental effort and there are some disabled folk for whom that is difficult.

I think using it universally is a good ideal, but I also think that there are legitimate reasons why some people don't.

Yeah, Trump is awful. Absolutely. But whoever was flying that helicopter killed 6 dozen people. The families all have to live with that knowledge.

Exclusive: Musk aides lock government workers out of computer systems at US agency, sources say Aides to Elon Musk charged with running the U.S. government human resources agency have locked career civil servants out of computer systems that contain the personal data of millions of federal employees, according to two agency officials.

I don't understand how this is possible. Musk should have no authority at all!

At one point yesterday, I was deeply struck at the thought that we could have had Kamala Harris in charge right now, and I was hit with a fresh wave of grief. It's been a long two weeks, I can't believe we're in for four years of this.

Also, the phrase "ordo amoris" is mostly used for loving God first and foremost, then loving neighbors for God's sake, then loving things like animals, things, and comforts. It isn't really about this kind of prioritization of our fellow man, but about subordinating other loves to the love of God.

You can find later Christian writers who do give an order closer to what Vance said, someone pointed me towards a work by Anglican Bishop Lancelot Andrewes from 1650. Even there, the original is talking about prioritizing limited resources.

I keep seeing headlines about "not normal" air traffic control staffing, but the reports say they normally go down to only one for those two positions, they just happened to do it 40 minutes early that night because of the little amount of traffic. This is probably not the cause of the crash.

This is true, but it didn't work.

The lessons in chemistry book cover.

The lessons in chemistry book cover.

I finished reading Lessons in Chemistry last night. I've seen a lot of conflicting takes on this one, but I loved it. Five stars, for sure.

Do check the content warnings before reading it. It's not a rom-com.

And this doesn't seem to be what is meant by Ordo Amoris, a term Vance told people to look up. That "order of love" means loving God first for His own sake, and loving ourselves and our neighbors as an outgrowth of our love for God. We are still called to love all even if we can't help all.

I'm not sure I agree with his categorization, which relies much more on judgement and preferences than simple proximity, but there's some point there. I'd agree that someone should help their child in need before a stranger in need, *if they can't do both.* That's what Vance missed.

Later Christian thought did divide it more like Vance. One example is Bishop Lancelot Andrewes in his 1650 catechesis on the 10 commandments. Even here, he states that everyone in need is our neighbor, but that it is not wrong to prioritize those closest to us, given limited resources.

Augustine describes it simply, "Further, all men are to be loved equally. But since you cannot do good to all, you are to pay special regard to those who, by the accidents of time, or place, or circumstance, are brought into closer connection with you." It's about practicality and proximity.

Yes, I'm up at 4 in the morning reading Lancelot Andrews and Augustine. Vance touches on a real traditional Christian principle, but misunderstands it. This "ranking" is based on ability to help others, given that it is impossible to help all. It's about where to focus your limited resources.
