Complete nonsense. Thankfully, NYC implemented the FARE Act last year. Basically, landlords can no longer pass that fee onto the tenants if they didn't hire the broker themselves.
Unfortunately, it's still all too common in North Jersey. No utilities, no laundry, no parking, and the place is tiny.
Oh yea, and likely no utilities will be included other than MAYBE heat and water.
Charging a broker fee when you didn't hire the broker to find you an apartment is wild.
Let's do some math:
$2,000 1br first month's rent
$3,000 month and a half deposit
$2,000 broker fee
None of this includes moving expenses. I'm all too used to this nonsense in Jersey, but it still baffles me.
