i call this view 'reactionary centrism' - the problem with it is that modern fascism *cannot* be appeased; they don't want a few compromises in women's sports, they want a total social transformation and the end of liberal democracy

you give them a bone, then another, then they want your arm

Please spread this footage everywhere… we can’t depend on MSM to report facts, so how to reach millions showing this cruelty at a daycare center?

When asked by Stephen Colbert why he was wearing a mask in public, Tom Hanks said..

“I’ve had Covid enough in my life I don’t need to do that again. I’m wearing this for health reasons”

More celebrities need to speak out like this.

Opinion | Mamdani’s Victory Is Less Significant Than You Think

The New York Times quickly sending out Douthat to argue that Mamdani’s victory doesn’t really matter is so predictable it borders on self-parody.

Remember, folks: Every time the Right wins an election, it’s an undeniable expression of the will of the people. If a lefty wins, it’s just a blip.

The Tea Party never reached the magnitude of No Kings. Yet it was covered as if it represented “real America,” just like MAGA today. Those are not empirical assessments, but articles of faith – ideological claims about the world that are widely shared in the American mainstream discourse.

What Really Happened in Portland Before Trump Deployed the National Guard In the two months before Trump’s decision, criminal charges were announced against only three people. On nights when physical conflict did erupt, it often came from police firing on, shoving, pepper-s...

NEW: We reviewed 700+ videos, hours of footage from ICE protesters and counterprotesters in Portland.

In 2 months before Trump said he was sending the National Guard, federal officers fire on, grab, pepper-spray or tear gas people 20 times -- without charging anyone. "Gratuitous," one expert said.

GOP Immediately Sues to Block California’s Voter-Approved Congressional Map Read more here.

NEW: A group of Republicans sue to block California’s newly-approved Prop 50, which voters passed just yesterday. The group argues the state violated the 14th and 15th Amendments by drawing congressional districts that “favor Hispanic voters.”

NEW REPORT: More than half of the companies that donated to Trump's ballroom are facing federal enforcement actions.

Donating millions to kiss up to Trump is nothing compared to the billions these companies have at stake in federal contracts and enforcement decisions.

America’s Dumbest Billionaires Fail to Stop Zohran Mamdani - The American Prospect It’s encouraging on many levels: New York City didn’t submit to a campaign of flagrant bigotry from disgraced two-time loser Andrew Cuomo, and Americans, particularly young ones, can still be politically inspired by a good candidate with a good message.

No fewer than 28 billionaires donated at least 100k to beat Zohran Mamdani. Their overt attempt to buy the election provided Mamdani with perfect talking points. From @ryanlcooper.com: trib.al/LEnjMCa

Escalation, Authoritarian “Normalization,” or a Democratic Turnaround? One year after the election: What we can say with certainty about the state of the Trumpist assault, where uncertainty lies, and where America might go from here

Where America stands, one year after the election.

A fascistic movement controls the government; they are building an authoritarian state; but they have not been able yet to extend authoritarian rule across society. A democracy no more, but not a consolidated autocratic regime yet.

Sora 2 is not being “misused” when people use it to produce racist, transphobic, misogynistic, & otherwise vile images—it exists to make it easier to put these images out into the world. Calling it a “misuse” is a grave misunderstanding of what these companies are up to, & lets OpenAI off the hook.

We saw this same issue — voting day bomb threats — in 2024. Motive could be strategic voter suppression, but in 2024 it was likely foreign interference designed to cause mayhem and further erode trust in US election. These tactics can also provide pretext for contesting elections later.

This is seriously one of those things that probably blows the minds of most people outside of the United States.

A “swearing in” should obviously be completely ceremonial, and should have no legal weight at all.

THE ELECTION GIVES THE WINNER THE ROLE, not the Speaker.

It really makes no sense.

But at this point anyone uncritically reporting statistics or narratives proposed by DHS is not really in the journalism business, if the journalism business is anchored on discovering and disseminating facts. Simply saying “The DHS said” is not a reasonable qualifier unless the media has more detail to report. Media have to weigh the news relevance of the state version of events while avoiding become stenographers for sources with a clear agenda and a record of misrepresentation.

The DHS has a communications team to establish its version of events and channels to disseminate them. It is very easy for hard pressed newsrooms to just reprint their claims. But real journalists should avoid becoming stenographers for a propagandist.

law enforcement was assaulted yesterday, our brave law enforcement officers were rammed by vehicles and boxed in by 10 cars this morning. Agents were unable to move their vehicle and exited the car. One of the drivers who rammed the law enforcement vehicle was armed with a semi-automatic weapon. Law enforcement was forced to deploy their weapons and fired defensive shots at an armed US citizen who drove herself to the hospital to get care for wounds.

The “10 cars” claim is a bit unclear. Only the drivers of two cars are mentioned in the criminal complaint. Martinez is a licensed gun owner who had a handgun in her purse, not a semi-automatic weapon, and in the criminal complaint there is no claim she brandished the weapon. She also did not drive herself to hospital, which would have been impressive having been shot five times, but called 911.

In Chicago, Marimar Martinez, a citizen, was shot five times by a Custom and Border Patrol agent. Its not clear who crashed into who. DHS made a series of claims that did not hold up. Martinez is still facing charges that could see her in jail for 20 years.

How an Attempted ICE Arrest Turned Deadly (Gift Article) The New York Times analyzed surveillance, police body-camera footage and bystander videos to understand what happened when an immigration agent shot and killed a motorist in a Chicago suburb.

One of those ICE shootings was fatal. ICE officials detained an immigrant who pulled away as they were leaning into the car. DHS said he hit and dragged an officer. A detailed reconstruction is more consistent with the immigrant trying to escape when he was shot.

Lets look at another example. ICE shot an American citizen and food bank worker in Los Angeles. After being released from hospital, he is facing charges of assault. Carlos Jimenez’s lawyer said that Jimenez got out of his car to tell ICE agents that students would soon be assembling for their school bus at the place where their vehicles were blocking part of the road. Then masked agents drew a gun on Jimenez who returned to his car, putting it into reverse. Officers then shot him.

Tricia McLaughlin claimed that Jimenez “attempted to run officers over by reversing directly at them without stopping” claiming that it is “another example of the threats our ICE officers are facing day in and day out as they risk their lives to enforce the law and arrest criminals.” His lawyer denies this, saying he was trying to back up to get around their vehicles. In this example, no video exists of the altercation, and so again we have to ask ourselves if we trust McLaughlin.

ICE is prohibited from using deadly force against an evading target, but can justify it if they say they are in danger. Immigration officials have shot into 4 cars in recent weeks. In 3 cases they said the target was driving toward them, when it seems more likely the drivers were trying to escape:

We experience these events through our media bubbles. So please take a little time to look at the details.

For example: here is how DHS described one incident in Chicago. Now watch the video, which tells a different story.

Who's Threatening Who? The Trump administration says immigration enforcement are being assaulted; the details tell a different story

New, from me: DHS says immigration enforcement employees like ICE are facing unprecedented threats and 1000% increase in assaults. But the data does not add up. Look at the details, and we see state agents using excessive force, and then lying about it.
