I mean that tracks - given you were the first (openly) gay person I knew personally — and within the year my best friend and my brother came out so you definitely helped ease those transitions in a profound way

I think a useful test for a physical AI company is "would I trust you to build and run an autonomous taxi service?"

it's the same bar. lives are on the line. you either systems engineer these problems or you're a cowboy looking for a quick exit

there are no shortcuts

Cannot imagine trusting AI for brain surgery when it still can’t parallel park

Still from Heated Rivalry show, pool scene in S1E5. Ilya stands over Shane at the side of the pool. Ilya is wet and has just exited the pool in a black swim suit; Shane is reclining on a pool chair dressed in dry, non-pool clothes. Ilya's wetness is probably a metaphor for his physicality, and right after this still he does drip on Shane intentionally.

While it's not a big part of my identity, I was technically a Division III NCAA college athlete, so I might have experiences that are a little salient for the discussion Heated Rivalry.

Thanks for this thread and for the reminder that “apolitical” is still political in big and small things.

And sorry for the many ways I’m sure I was apolitical way back when

You had me (and I think most of our entry) at a LGBT support event in front of bronfman on like day 2 I believe … and I was (at that time) an unlikely candidate to be at such a thing.

So yes you were an effective and brave leader when that was not so easy

I know they get huge hate but I absolutely love classic 70s/80s Catholic hymns like "Here I am, Lord" and "One Bread, One Body" and go absolutely bonkers when my Episcopal parish puts them into rotation. If I ever end up in ordained ministry those are top choices for a post-ordination services.

We deserve every bad thing that happens to us.

Obama was wrong then. Trump is wrong now.

The Taliban came back into power and democracy died in Afghanistan in no small measure because corruption was eating the country alive.

I pray we can avoid a similar fate

That is what the DOJ decisions on Eric Adams feel like.

Over and over, resignation and resignation, Trump is choosing corruption, publicly and out loud, over the Rule of Law.

If we can’t trust the Justice system to do their jobs we can’t trust anything.

It was like the wind was taken out of our sails.

And worse for our partners in Afghanistan they knew their jobs and their lives and their families were not safe.

Because given the choice between the rule of law and corruption - we had chosen corruption.

Redirecting...

What I did not expect, what no one expected, was that President Obama and his team would interfere and give their blessing for the charges to be dropped.

This was big. And it was a test. Would President Karzai and the rest of the Afghan leadership allow this to happen? Or would they shut it all down.

In November 2010 they executed their biggest raid yet.

Arresting an aide to President Karzai who was taking bribes (including a Toyota Corolla) to direct contracts and gov policy

They were very good. We had the best of the best from a half dozen nations training these officers and lawyers so they could have the ability and independence to deal with corruption that was rife in all levels of government - from paychecks to army privates all the way up to the president

We spent more than a year building up the MCTF (major crimes task force) to go after high level corruption in the country

This was to save the US taxpayer and the Afghan people money and suffering

Way back when I was one of a small group of people working on anti-corruption programs in Afghanistan.

The Obama administration (and Richard Holbrooke) had said corruption was the #1 issue facing that country and we had to do something about it.
