Nasty Party.
Senior Tories and big landlords discuss ways to thwart renters’ rights bill.
Tories filibustering to thwart no-fault evictions, prevent landlords from accepting more rent than the amount for which a property has been listed, force landlords to carry out essential repairs.
While “very few” PhD students and supervisors make formal complaints about each other, far fewer learn the outcomes, an Australian study has found

We hope that this will be a useful practical resource. Anyone who cares about our problem with sexual violence at universities may wish to repost - we need to get such resources out there. @durhampsych.bsky.social

In case you’re not sure how it’s going down here, America.
Delighted to report that the 2nd edition of our (with Clarissa DiSantis) book on addressing student sexual violence can be ordered now. Hopefully it will prove a useful resource for the sector. @david-batty.bsky.social @howardjournalcj.bsky.social @bpsofficial.bsky.social @ukri.org

“Systematic abuse of human rights” as ever nobody will be held to account. We were promised transparency about the new Women’s Justice Board - so are the minutes and action points from its first of four meetings this year available?
This is another free to attend event in the North East organised by PORSCH. The physical health of prisoners rarely receives the attention deserved. Food budgets are low in relation to meeting nutritional needs. Why not register and come along?

Shabana Mahmood totally out of her depth saying things have changed and women can now wash their underwear- only ….they still can’t. Like the last lot, ‘Yes Minister’ rules. Decades of cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment but gongs all round.
Wales’ higher education landscape could be “devastated” by the large-scale cuts announced by Cardiff University, academics have warned

The permanent secretary post for the department of health and social care is being advertised with pay of 170-200k. The budget responsibility will be roughly around 200 to over 1000 times as much as a university leader - and yet get paid significantly less - albeit a great salary.
Not a a fan of Starmer but fair play to him he has at least been willing to challenge Trump colonialism. In Gaza.

If UK news shows are going to give Nigel Farage a platform to spout this absolute boll**** about Brexit & the vaccine rollout (unchallenged) I’ll happily come back every week to correct it

ICYMI — Sharpton led a buy-in to support Costco after they didn’t back down on DEI
Is this the right messaging for students to be able to work from morning until midnight? It may be popular with students but it may not be good modelling and of course will presumably increase costs too.
Australia’s government has overlooked existing powers in belatedly appointing a new watchdog to constrain universities’ executive pay

Why don’t we align VC salaries with senior civil service permanent secretary salaries? Parity in public sector pay makes good sense and would most likely strengthen an HE underfunding argument.
And although such salaries themselves are a very small percentage of financial turnover they are routinely used to undermine the credibility of an under funding narrative - maybe because they are seen to be giving the finger to government and the public?

New UK pensions minister has called to scrap ‘rubbish’ triple lock on state pension.
Labour/Tories gunning for pensioners, condemning them to poverty.
The issue isn't Young v Old. It is justice, equity, humanity. Young will get old too & face premature death.
Fight for rights.

Five of the most senior former judges in England and Wales made an extremely rare intervention and called on the government to reverse the trend of imposing ever longer sentences.
Here we discuss the impact of sentence inflation: howardleague.org/what-is-sent...
After 14 yrs of Tory neglect patients in England hospitals dying in corridors, pregnant women miscarrying in side rooms.
Cupboards, car parks, bathrooms used as makeshift areas for patients
All to fund tax cuts for corporations & the rich and facilitate privatisation.

It’s not that difficult some do it really well. Maybe the biggest single barrier is that the brutal reality is that for many it’s simply not up there as the top priority.
