High-resolution carbon isotope record from Svalbard reveals elevated atmospheric CO2 during the Middle Devonian Taghanic crisis The Devonian was a time of climatic upheaval, with many biotic crises, anoxic events and dramatic climatic changes. It is yet unclear what the control…

This is the first such estimate of rapid CO2 change during the Devonian (3/3).

Two graphs: Top graph shows published CO2 estimates for the Eifelian, Givetian, and Frasnian. Values range from ~500 to 1500 ppm. Bottom graph shows new high-resolution CO2 estimates in the Givetian. Values range from ~600 ppm to 4500 ppm, but most likely values reach ~1400 ppm.

We find that CO2 levels fluctuated on short timescales (<100,000 years), from background levels of 623 ppm (range: 473 to 773 ppm) to as much as 1373 ppm (range: 882 to 2082 ppm) during the Taghanic Crisis (2/3).

Four photos of rocks with swirling textures.

Four photos of rocks with swirling textures.

Here are four photos of squiggly rocks on Earth.

Can you guess which of these, if any, are evidence of past life on Earth?

If we received similar photos, from let's say Mars, would we know if it is life or not?

Lafayette is at a crossroads. The University sits at the hub of it all. Prologue: Skip back to the turn of the 20th century when Lafayette as we know it was in its infancy. Back then, “downtown” meant dusty roads, a few streetlights and a railroad station.

A totally representative 10-day sample of temperatures in Lafayette, LA.

A totally representative 10-day sample of temperatures in Lafayette, LA.

What many don't realize is that the annual average daily temperature for Lafayette, Louisiana (69F) falls right between that of Los Angeles (66F) and Bermuda (72F).

Some might say we have the optimal Goldilocks temperature.

I think the city should market that more.
