Two graphs: Top graph shows published CO2 estimates for the Eifelian, Givetian, and Frasnian. Values range from ~500 to 1500 ppm. Bottom graph shows new high-resolution CO2 estimates in the Givetian. Values range from ~600 ppm to 4500 ppm, but most likely values reach ~1400 ppm.
We find that CO2 levels fluctuated on short timescales (<100,000 years), from background levels of 623 ppm (range: 473 to 773 ppm) to as much as 1373 ppm (range: 882 to 2082 ppm) during the Taghanic Crisis (2/3).
Multiple photos of rocks in Svalbard, including an aerial view of the landscape with gray and beige sedimentary rocks and several photos showing these rocks at outcrop scale.
We present new high-resolution carbon isotope data from #Svalbard to investigate atmospheric CO2 during the Middle Devonian, particularly the Taghanic crisis (1/3).

Four photos of rocks with swirling textures.
Here are four photos of squiggly rocks on Earth.
Can you guess which of these, if any, are evidence of past life on Earth?
If we received similar photos, from let's say Mars, would we know if it is life or not?
