That was a fair criticism - though with a few exceptions, "serious" SF wasn't that much better on that score at the time.

Plus a lot of "you got fantasy in my science fiction" complaints.

It's largely been forgotten how hostile a lot of "serious' SF people were to Star Wars in the first few years after its release.

Yesterday the news said student absenteeism is way up, today they say hospitalizations for vaccine-preventable illnesses have doubled, and so far as I can tell nobody yet has connected those two things.

We have seen this before, with the kidnapping of Maduro or the mass protests against ICE raids – fake images of real events. While these synthetic images fictionalize reality, they are not necessarily meant as disinformation. Rather, they both illustrate and cater to wide-spread expectations

I wouldn't say the original MC was a right-wing text, though. It's quite explicitly a satire of McCarthyism.

More seriously, Phil Tinline's Ghosts of Iron Mountain. It's the only good text I've seen on left-right movement and overlap.

I agree that seeing Killmonger as the hero (or at least not a villain) is probably outside the bounds of a reasonable negotiated reading, but it's a legitimate resistant reading so long as it's framed as such.

interesting that when a movie with female protagonists does poorly the response is to cancel upcoming projects with female protagonists and when a movie with female protagonists is a huge hit the response is to cancel upcoming projects with female protagonists

This is why I go so hard about studying entertainment as politically relevant media. Viewers may be learning about these issues for the first time, or connecting to what they’ve already experienced. And how they make sense of entertainment as politically relevant will affect what happens next.

IMO, we need to teach them both, as a two-step sequence. Teach students how to identify sources that are reliable enough to be worth your critical attention, then teach them to analyze those.

Comparative transmissibility of SARS-CoV-2, influenza virus, and common human coronaviruses in the post-pandemic era: a community- and household-based prospective cohort study in China Despite continuous viral evolution, it remains unclear whether SARS-CoV-2 has transitioned to transmission dynamics resembling those of other endemic respiratory pathogens in the post-pandemic era.
