YEAH GO YOU!!

I saw someone on here arguing the other day that you don’t own a book, you only own a license to the book and the book itself is a token of the license. I assure you, I own my books. I can lend them out. I can read them aloud to my child. I can sell them to other people. I can hit you with them
It really feels like companies are telling us we all NEED juiceros. At home, in the office, in our cars...
Now it's in my top five for both kudos and bookmarks. It's been up for a week. Many of the fics it's beating out have been up for 10-20 *years.*
Nothing makes you feel more rational and sane than joining a community space for a niche interest and seeing other people go WAY HARDER for that thing than you do.
[Reading another phm fic and seeing that the other author gave an unnamed incidental character the same slightly-unusual name as I did]
I did the math (subtracting fanart/meta essays, including fics I have in the anon collection, etc) and my 100th fic on AO3 was my SW prequels fic. Which is fitting, since my first fanfic ever was a SW fic (it's almost thirty years old)!
The Unhinged Fic™ is already my NINTH most popular fanfic (/111) by kudos and eighth by bookmarks. In a day and a half since posting it. What. WHAT IS HAPPENING.
I’m laughing but at the same time when I was watching them on the ocean it looked so much like something from a different world of the sort we once seemed to be headed towards that I felt all weird.
My wife does not read my fic but she thinks I'm a good writer and she's proud of me! 🥰
Me: this fic has gotten more kudos in a day and a half than my 2yr old fic for The Bear, wtf.
Wife: you wrote a good fic for an incredibly niche ecosystem! YOU'RE IN THE BENTHIC ZONE AND JUST DROPPED A WHALEFALL.
ME: *laughs so hard I cry*
The #OTW Board will be holding a public meeting in their Discord server at 1:00 UTC on April 18. Find out more—including what time that is for you—at the OTW website: www.transformativeworks.org/otw-board-me...
A cropped screenshot of the stats for an AO3 fic. There are 69 bookmarks.
Nice:
LOL GOOD TO KNOW
"If you were in charge of Star Trek what would you do?"
Seven of Nine's adventures as a... Ranger, was it? Whatever. I was WAY more invested in THAT than whatever else was going on in Picard.
I'm going to take a drink every time someone calls this fic "sweet" (6) or an aro/ace thanks me for writing it (3) or someone says they teared up while reading it (2). Because I don't know how else to handle my feelings lol.
I was saying it's like a prequel to The Expanse (complimentary)
Oh, good, got a comment that said the dick/dildo jokes landed. Phew.
I felt SO unhinged writing this, and yet the most common descriptor people are using in comments is "sweet." Two people said that they teared up. What. What did I do. Can I bottle this for later.
Been there.
Project Hail Mary omegaverse nonsense (mind the tags and the author's notes, it's probably not what you think it is): archiveofourown.org/works/82830811
....okay I'm de-anoning it. This is absurd. Y'all have been WARNED.
How did this fic get 185 kudos in 12 hours. What. What is happening.
This is also a good tool for other emotional reactions, like humor & such. Like a character being embarrassed and the reader finding it HILARIOUS (though I often don't, personally, I just know that kind of humor is common).
It's fun to be aware of and play with this divide! Readers don't ALWAYS react in parallel to the characters' reactions, though readers' empathies for/with character emotions are useful tools in their own right.
As far as the characters in such fics are concerned, they just want each other more than the vow of chastity binds/repels either of them.
Notably, I've done this in a couple priest!kink fics, where the characters aren't getting off on the trope of the priest "falling from grace" / "being corrupted" / etc, but the READERS might.
Diagetic kink means the characters get off on the potential for discovery. Non-diagetic kink means they may not care, but the potential for discovery amps things up for the READER.
F'r ex: two characters, overcome by their lust for one another, find a sheltered spot where they can be together, but which isn't exactly private.
Sometimes I like to play with what I call "non-diagetic kink": where an element of a scene might titillate/arouse a reader but that DOESN'T do so for the characters in the scene.
