Lainey is another person I turn to when it comes to breaking down and explaining laws and legal issues regarding disability and digital accessibility.

Dr. Jaipreet Virdi historian of medicine, technology, and disability

Finally able to introduce myself properly to @bsky.app !

Hi all, I'm a #deaf historian of #histSTM and #DisabilityHistory at the University of Delaware. I think & write about disability technologies, disabled perspectives, and medical/scientific authority. Hearing aids are my niche topic

A word Americans should know now more than ever:

Kakistocracy- a government run by the worst, least qualified, or most unscrupulous citizens.

Yes, there’s a word for it.

Me to my old employer: I see you have a good thing going here. You force disabled people out, tell them they have extra time to submit an internal complaint so they miss the deadline to file a human rights complaint then refuse to investigate. I’m going to fuck that up for you.

If you are invested in #PhilTech and would like to be added to this list, please chat me and give me your handle + the handle of another person from an underrepresented group in our field or adjacent field who should also be on this list. Thanks!

I dont know how to get through to people. This interminable desire to abdicate all responsibility is killing us.

The attempt to distinguish "real [condition]" from other forms is rampant. It's a way to divide a community & reduce resources for it

It can also lead to treatment delays. Folks think they're not 'really' depressed/addicted/in pain since they're not miserable 24/7 like those with 'real' [condition]

On Being an Outlier Proponents of AI promise incredible benefits — but at what cost? Sometimes, we mistake AI as a threat for the future, but our systems already rely on algorithms. Dr. Rua Williams reflects on the unexp...

Just a few months ago, I was hesitant to agree to write a book on AI. Every day was a new hype cycle. But the /context/ of use is not changing. I am not hesitant anymore. Look for "Disabling Intelligences" from Palgrave MacMillan late next year. In the meantime:

This is a very good time for Bluesky to really invest in accessibility.

Alt text is good, but we need more and there are many of us who can offer feedback.

The best time to invest in accessibility is at the start, but the second best time is now.

my dissertation, "crip data studies," is now out in the world! may be helpful for folks working on projects at the intersections of disability studies, creator studies, + digital media.

Newbies will think I'm lying when I say that, before Bluesky supported gifs, we would type something like "surprised guy gif" and everyone understood it and we were fine

I’ve been in MST instead of EST all week. My bodymind is a mess. My phone and iPad agree on MST, but my EST watch reminds me of why I have felt so off all day, everyday.

Doing all of your travel in a month seems so rough, esp to someone like myself who never travels!

@wolvendamien.bsky.social sorry but not sorry you might have new followers because I took an AT round table discussion about the “good and bad” of AI into a very philosophical bent and name dropped you

Two images from insane a McDonalds.

The top image is a vintage one, featuring a large decorate tree, a mural of ronald mcdonald in a in a wild west scene, and colorful tables.

The bottom image is of a modern day Mcdonalds, featuring plain white tables and walls and ordering kiosks

Ok. You are very smart in this flavor of the world. Where should we look for the “explain it to me like I’m a 10 year old who is earnest, confused, excited, and aware of the surrounding world but not sure where to start” version for those of us who just like splitting logs in the woods these day?

this is exactly why i still buy discs in 2023. it's crazy to think that we are reaching a point where piracy will be the only option to own media once dvds and blu-rays are gone.

I keep saying millenarian eschatology is the best way to deeply understand tech money culture but it's mostly just me and @wolvendamien.bsky.social out here in the demons-and-end-times zone

It used to be "Reduce, reuse, recycle."

Now it's just "Recycle." Take that product that broke after using it twice and hurl it right into the ol' bin, and don't ask questions about whether recycling actually happens once it's out of your sight.

Before the image loaded, even with the alt….my mind registered “Octopus Gallery” and imagined a much different, boat-based and eight-legged scenario.
