Also, like, retcon is correct, but really the thing that happened is Kunio had 2 timelines, Koha (mainline) and Downtown (side), but Downtown was way more popular so when ArcSys bought the Technos library they just merged everything into Downtown so the true original mainline got squashed.
Mami was Riki's girlfriend for real, the premise of River City Ransom (Downtown Nekketsu) is Riki asking his HATED RIVAL Kunio to help him save his girlfriend from Yamada, so that part is real.
Kunio in any timeline prior to RCG only ever dated Misako, ironically.

This is why all this flimflamming about moral bludgeoning just doesn't matter. The AES+ is not the best way to play these games, it's not the cheapest, it's not the most convenient, arguably it's not even good. The AES+ could run these games absolutely flawlessly and still not be worth the price.
The ultimate irony here is that if you deeply, truly cared about having a good way to play these games, good news the MiSTer Pi exists.
