Was also hoping that Justine Mettraux, who'll be the first woman to cross the line, could sneak past Thomas Ruyant to finish 7th overall - but just not enough speed & a little too much distance in the final 100nm stretch.
👏🏽 to Ruyant, Mettraux & Sam Goodchild for fantastic races
#VendeeGlobe #VG2024
A curious sight: a #VendeeGlobe finisher leaving Sables d'Olonne barely 5 hours after crossing the line!
Then I checked, home base is only ~100nm as the crow flies NW away in Lorient.
#VG2024
Dalin really has sailed a great race.
Chapeau in advance ... in anticipation of him crossing the finish line in say 14-16 hrs.
#VendeeGlobe #VG2024
How frustrating for Charlie Dalin these last 120nm must be, sailing upwind in light air, knowing that Richomme (who doubled his distance made over the last 4 hrs) is ready to pounce.
But, it would have to be a disaster of the greatest magnitude that would prevent him winning now.
#VendeeGlobe
#VendeeGlobe map showing Oliver Heer, in 30th place, in the middle of a high pressure system with light winds and going backwards. #VG2024
The boys up front - Charlie Dalin, Yoann Richomme & Seb Sebastian - are still leading the pack into the New Year. Xu Jingkun also having a good 1st day of 2025, now within 100nm of Antoine Cornic.
But what's happened to Oliver Heer on Tut Gut❓️
Tut ... sicht nicht gut - because he's going backwards!
I think the use of preventers on race boats vary. I've done long offshore races on boats with & without them.
If rigged well, I think the benefits far outweigh the minor inconvenience of using them.
They changed they're procedures so people had to traverse forward / backward underneath the traveller (which was about one high from one side of the cockpit to the other).
Definitely Chinese gybe for the first one.
Sadly the main sheet incident seems to be somewhat reflective of an incident on the Clipper Round the World race a few éditions ago where a man was also killed by a mainsheet in a storm situation. Far bigger boat & much bigger load though.
Although originally reported as both having been struck by booms, only one was struck by the boom.
Equally sadly however, the other was caught by a whipping main sheet (not confirmed whether a planned or a Chinese gybe), which knocked the guy down & his head landed on a winch.
Both totally tragic.
Can someone tell me how Sam Davies made such fantastic progress over the last few days, with Roman Attanasio following in her wake?
Good weather pick?
I've been travelling & the internet time I've had, I've used to follow the tragedies & other unbelievable bad luck of the Sydney to Hobart fleet
Richomme's taken the lead in the #VendeeGlobe again.
If he hasn't already, he'll pass Cape Horn first, it seems.
The MarineTraffic app shows their respective positions caught on AIS 2 hours ago.
At least they don't have traffic to contend with until they get to the other side.
#VG2024
Yannick Bestaven, in 8th place on day 42 of the race is ahead of his position on Day 50 in the 2020/2021 race, which he won. However he's >1500nm behind leaders Dalin & Richomme, who are set to pass Cape Horn within half a day. #VendeeGlobe #VG2024
Who will pass Cape Horn first, to take Armel Le Cléac'h‘s 2016 record (47 days, 34 mins)?
Can Charlie Dalin keep the small lead that's he's regained from Yoann Richomme?
2020 winner Yannick Bestaven is beating his record from that race, but he's in 8th, 1572nm behind Dalin.
#VendeeGlobe #VG2024
Half the fleet in daylight (subject to snow, rain & clouds) whilst the rest are in the dark.
Yet whilst current leader Charlie Dalin is ~6882nm ahead of van Weynbergh, he's 12 hrs behind in terms of date & time
No wonder they need to keep a race day count and must also refer to UTC!

1. Arrows encircled by red: tide / current directions & relative strengths
2. T-symbols encircled in green, in the create: springs from the seabed
3. Symbology encircled in blue at the mouth of the crater: breaking waves, over the very shallow depth there... which is why you'd need to dinghy in 😁
The #VendeeGlobe race map viewed from the south, with Antarctica at the centre. Leader Yoann Richomme is almost half a world away from the last in the race (~175°). Tail-ender Denis van Weynbergh loses about 200-250nm a day compared to the daily miles covered by Richomme & Charlie Dalin in 2nd. #VG2024
From the top down... or another point of view, from the bottom (Antarctica) up
Richomme & Dalin closely behind battling for 1st to Cape Horn. Then the tactics: how to get past the Falklands with weather conditions forecast
Meanwhile, at the back end, #36 is almost half a world away.
#VG2024
And another change at the top - now it's back to the order of the previous few weeks:
1 Dalin
2 Simon (0.4nm)
3 Richomme (0.5nm)
Sure to change again. Dalin & Richomme likely to benefit from a new low in ~18 hrs.
Game on !
All 3 safe from Lunven (600nm behind) for the foreseeable future.
#VG2024
Very, very tight at the front of the #VendeeGlobe!
After ~13985nm (25900km), the top 3 boats are within 2.5nm of each other, with Seb Simon just in front.
For 2 wks it was
1/ Dalin 2/ Simon 3/ Richomme
then, briefly
Richomme > Dalin > Simon.
Now
Simon > Dalin >= Richomme.
And in 12 or 24 hrs? 🤔😃
After spending a few weeks in the Southern Ocean, Jingkun Xu's missing land & people ... & says people better watch out when he returns to Sables d'Olonne because he might just kiss everyone on the pontoon in the French way:
Kiss once on the port side & once on starboard 😆
#VendeeGlobe #VG2024
At the last #VendeeGlobe update, Charlie Dalin now a little over 5nm & 2nd behind Yoann Richomme, who's been stalking him for days, . Seb Simon sailed many more miles than both of them over the last 24 hours and, being closer to the rhum line, is reported to be only 30nm behind the leader. #VG2024
Richomme said he sneaks into mouse holes to get ahead, & he's done that. But with Dalin just over 5nm behind & Seb Simon making up an extra 50nm on both of them to be ne only 30nm behind the lead, there's still strong competition at the front - especially with the lighter winds forecast.
#VG2024
... noise sensitive areas in national parks which may affect permitted flight paths &/or min flight altitudes.
IMHO, some of this may be beyond the Nepali CAA.
In any case it would require cooperation between them, the national govt & Sagarmartha Park management.
This is a complex problem and very difficult to police.
The CAA could designate approved routes and minimum heights above ground in some areas for noise abatement. This happens elsewhere - designated routes are common in many places, & in South Africa for example there are designated wildlife ... 🧵
#VendeeGlobe tracking map showing Richomme only 25nm behind Dalin at 21:00 CET 16-Dec-2024, and Seb Simon, who's got a damaged foil but is still managing to keep up, and is 117nm behind Dalin. #VG2024
What's a guy gotta do to stay in the lead? It's tough!
Charlie Dalin has led for weeks, had a ~200nm lead over Seb Simon in 2nd & a 500+nm lead over Yoann Richomme then in 3rd.
He's not slouching, but Richomme is like a shark on the chase. He could be in 1st place by the next update.
#VendeeGlobe
So disappointed for Pip and the #PipHare Racing Team - de-masted & out of the race.
She'd overcome other tech problems this far, even repairing cracks in a forward bulkhead only 6 days ago, & was making up ground & looking to really get into her stride.
Quel bummer!

Yep, annoying isn't it!
I swype, so am probably more prone to rogue auto-corrections than those who type.
I've already requested an edit facility (for a limited time after posting) from the BlueSky gods, & image auto-rotate functionality - to no avail so far.
Guess they're busy keeping us safe.
Wow - you really took the guidelines for Alt text seriously! 👏🏽
