The government is using universities to do basic research that the private sector would never do at rates lower than the private sector would charge (thanks to the cheap labor of grad students).

Basic research has been good for this nation.

How can we better think and talk about human-like qualities attributed to language technologies like LLMs? In our #CHI2025 paper, we taxonomize how text outputs from cases of user interactions with language technologies can contribute to anthropomorphism. arxiv.org/abs/2502.09870 1/n

Our FATE MTL team has been working on a series of projects on anthropomorphic AI systems for which we recently put out a few pre-prints I’m excited about. While working on these we tried to think carefully not only about key research questions but also how we study and write about these systems

200bn Weights of Responsibility The Stress of Working in Modern AI

RIP to Felix Hill. We overlapped at Cambridge ages ago but I remember him as an ebullient and witty conversationalist, plus kind and introspective. His blog post is relevant to anyone, even if not directly working in AI, experiencing stress from the pace of research <3 medium.com/@felixhill/2...

At #NeurIPS2024, the keynote speaker perpetuated explicit racist stereotypes against Chinese students. Generalizations against a community subject to discrimination, even as an “example”, further provokes discrimination. Below, video of an audience member’s perfect response.

NeurIPS acknowledges that the cultural generalization made by the keynote speaker today reinforces implicit biases by making generalisations about Chinese scholars. This is not what NeurIPS stands for. NeurIPS is dedicated to being a safe space for all of us. 1/3
