Feels like something cracked today in the transatlantic alliance. Europeans have been swallowing their pride, bitting their tongues, and bending the knee. That strategy may have bought them time but it has now clearly failed. It also had a major cost - it has made the WH think Europe will cave. 1/
Trump will likely try to make Denmark choose between NATO and Greenland, and wider Europe between Greenland and Ukraine.
But luckily Trump has also demonstrated that under his leadership, any US security guarantee won’t be worth much. So the choice should be simple.
On the one hand, Europe will be worried about a tit-for-tat economic spiral. But the politics of this fight really favor Europe, just as it favored the Liberals/Carney in Canada.
Moreover, a major European economic response that roils markets c/d really hurt Trump politically w/ midterms 4/
Article 1 The Parties undertake, as set forth in the Charter of the United Nations, to settle any international dispute in which they may be involved by peaceful means in such a manner that international peace and security and justice are not endangered, and to refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force in any manner inconsistent with the purposes of the United Nations.

More than 200,000 Danish citizens have signed a petition to buy California as a response to Trump’s attempt to take Greenland.
They say they will provide Californians with “rule of law, universal health care, fact-based politics, and a lifetime supply of Danish pastries.”
It's in our blood to take more soil. Hmmm... that has a certain ring to it.
If Trump is not stopped now we will have another Hitler-Putin on our hands. Maybe finally time to learn something from history. And since Americans seems to be totally unwilling to do anything to stop him it will be up to Europeans.
Europe should share its escalation plan tomorrow.
Tariffs on US goods, taxes on tech companies, dumping US stocks, currency and treasuries. That's the order of escalation. That should set US markets in motion on Monday and maybe get some sane Americans to call their senators and congressmen.
A few reflections on the US in the darkness of Trump:
1. The US is unable to defend any values.
2. The US lacks all checks & balances.
3. The US establishment is cowardly & ineffective.
Shut up about the free & brave!
They are elsewhere, in Ukraine for example.
Americans, you own this mess. Fix it!
quick while the government is shut down let’s all switch to metric
Several items on Declaration of Independence list of grievances against George III also apply to Trump today, most notably on immigration, trade, and deportation without due process. Like King George, he is "unfit to be the ruler of a free people": reason.com/volokh/2025/...
In May 1940 the Netherlands was invaded by Nazi Germany and Nazi policies forced on Dutch institutions. As a result of protests by professors & students at Leiden, the university was closed by the Nazis until the liberation of 🇳🇱 by 🇨🇦 forces. Today, Leiden U remains consistently in the World Top 100.

Be proud.
Proud of whom you love.
Proud of who you are.
Proud of who you are becoming. Because your journey is your power.
Always remember: Europe is your ally. I am your ally.
This week and every week.
Be proud. Always.
More than 80 Harvard faculty members have signed on to a pledge to donate 10% of their paycheck to support staff and students, as long as the University resists Trump's unlawful demands. I am so proud of my colleagues. docs.google.com/document/d/1...
Friends on #MathSky, I hope you realise that we have _finally_ an option to get dogmatic answers to long-standing questions like:
- What's 0^0?
- Is 0 a natural number?
- What's the dimension of the empty set?

🚨 REPLICATION REPORT UPDATE: One year ago, a tweet by John Holbein alerted me, @ollefolke.bsky.social, and @jopieboy.bsky.social to a paper with a shocking result about Sweden’s law criminalizing the purchase of sex.🧵
I am shocked, shocked that Leavitt doesn't understand what kind of thing the Library of Congress is.

I’m still baffled at how America took one of the basic principles of the presidency — the occupant shouldn’t be able to benefit financially from the office — and just said, nah, that just doesn’t count for this one guy.
NIH is canceling new/ongoing grants that contain foreign sub-award contracts w/ some "new" framework coming in September. For now, you have to remove the sub-award or they will terminate the whole grant. Looks like Jay Bhattacharya is all in on the MAGA "foreign is bad" idea.

Budget released today:
40% cut to NIH
50% cut to NSF
If enacted, this will destroy academic research in the United States. It will also have a major trickle down effect on the entire academic ecosystem

The new French ambassador to Sweden just definitely included allies in the French vital interest:
”Our French vital interests also include the interests of our allies. In that sense, the nuclear umbrella also covers our allies and of course Sweden is among them”
