Honored to receive this recognition from the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa .

Jeberti isn’t just a cameraman But in Ethiopia’s Somali Region, holding a camera can get you arrested.
It’s a system that targets young voices, turns cameras into threats, and pushes media workers into impossible choices.

Photojournalist Kamil Ahmed Nasir has been released from custody in the Somali region. We learned that his Jan 3 arrest came as police stepped up harassment of journalists ahead of a visit to the region by PM Abiy Ahmed. He was taken away for protesting the confiscation of a colleague's equipment.
Here's my Q&A with @marceldirsus.bsky.social for his weekly Substack, The Hundred, on the subject of Abiy Ahmed, Ethiopia, and my new book: "The Abiy Project: God, Power and War in the New Ethiopia":

Abdulrazaq Hassan, Ethiopian broadcast journalist and President of the Somali Regional Journalism Association, photographed standing in front of the historical Al-Najashy mosque in Negash, Tigray. The dome was shelled and partially destroyed in November 2020 when Ethiopian and Eritrean soldiers attacked the region. Repairs to the mosque are visible in the photograph.
Happy to see the Najashy mosque in Tigray, one of the world's oldest mosques under repair. In 2020, Ethiopian soldiers shelled & looted it. Turkiye is funding repairs. That's my pal, fellow journo @abdulrazaq.bsky.social visiting the site.
