New university free speech complaints system to come into force this year Universities could face fines of £500,000 or 2% of their income if they are found to have failed to protect free speech.

Legislating that literally every view, regardless of academic rigour, should be platformed by universities helps only those who want to spread disinformation and have a vested interest in damaging trust in expertise.

"When I’ve been most lost, I’ve felt myself realigned by encounters with novels. It’s been so profound for me what books have done to me in my life, this electric sense of reconnection that I’ve encountered when I’ve been at my most disconnected."

Awesome plenary from @nakedprimate.bsky.social at #ehbea2026, about gestures and storytelling, which started with a dawn drive in Chad and ended with a Douglas Adams quote perfectly encapsulating the process of science

‘I see it as trafficking’: the brutal reality of life as a foreign student in the UK The long read: Universities in Britain rely on overseas applicants paying full fees, which has given rise to some unscrupulous recruiters and left many hopefuls and their families deep in debt

if you work in a UK uni, drop everything and read this (not news to many of us, but sobering to have the dots joined up; the stories are outrageous and heartbreaking)

When I was a teenager I took public transport to and from school and waited in the local library afterwards for my dad to finish work and collect me. I read, I did homework, I borrowed books and tapes, I was safe and warm. I work in libraries now and getting that job felt like coming home.

Are boys really in crisis? What the science says in the age of the manosphere Some data suggest that boys and young men are struggling with school, health and masculinity. But does talk of a male crisis further sideline women and girls?

Thoughtful piece: “Rather than focusing on a crisis of boys or girls, many specialists say the priority should be supporting young people overall, sometimes in a gender-neutral way”

Which is why I think all in the social and human sciences would benefit from learning the basics of agent-based modelling.

Because when you are forced to build models of social phenomena from the ground up, you'll realise how little we actually know.

Science Communication Is Central to the Practice of Science Opinion | Explaining and defending knowledge is as essential to the scientific enterprise as publishing research.

“if we consider the notion that explanation is not separate from discovery, but one of its highest forms, then we might rebuild a culture in which science is not merely produced but understood. That’s not a decorative add-on to the scientific enterprise. It’s one of the ways the enterprise survives”

Post 2/14 For every one of us receiving an award, there are countless others who had the talent but lacked the structural support to survive the 'leaky pipeline.' We view this prize not as an individual achievement, but as a debt owed to those who couldn't make it.
