A grey snake is partly curled up on the ground. The head is raised slightly. A dark zig-zag line is running along the back and there are similarly coloured dark spots on the sides of the body. The snake has reddish eyes with vertical pupils. There's grass and other plants growing along the ground in most of the picture. The snake is looking at something to the right of the camera.

🐍Common European adder (Vipera berus).

Max. size 104 cm (3'5").

Found from France and the UK in the west, across Scandinavia, Central Europe, Russia, Ukraine and all the way to north-western China and Mongolia.

Considered Least Concern by the IUCN.
