My biggest streams are books and niche quilts. Books are still selling but greatly slowed. I haven’t sold a quilt all year—already—and don’t expect to anytime soon. I happily live lean (I’m picky about how I splurge), but I’m already feeling it. But also yes; what else to do but keep on keeping on.
It cost me $56 to fill up this week using a 10c/gallon members discount.
Secretary of the Navy is out. Seems fine.
Nothing I take more seriously than opinions on how to stick it to the man, but in cool ways, from human trafficking rich people and millionaire streamers.
They tried this with the referendum. Didn’t budge. And but I thought “states rights blah blah” amirite.
I used to think “don’t they want retirement? A life beyond the grind of politics?” until I realized they retire in office. A known name on the slate who abdicates to their staff and enjoys the benefits conferred on an elected without worrying about the rest. If they even have capacity anymore.
Every elected official that dies in office of old age or a known disease is a party-wide failure
If supply goes down, prices have to rise until consumption matches supply: you get less oil and you pay more for it.
From what I've read, the ballpark for where the new equilibrium might be is not ~$115 a barrel, but ~$200. That's gas well north of $6 in the USA.
NEW: I've been shocked by some of the numbers I've been seeing on behind-the-meter power plants for data centers, so I did a little math.
less than a dozen gas plants being built to power data centers for big tech companies could emit a maximum of nearly 130 million tons of CO2e each year (!)
adjusted for inflation (both in terms of the price of a gallon of gas and general inflation) the federal gas tax is lower today than when it was introduced. our roads and bridges are crumbling and that's how we pay for that stuff!
I hope six of you have already pitched this to your local paper.
Anyway, what a whirlwind trip. I know that things have been so difficult and traumatic and the future is uncertain, but it felt nice to do something good for someone and to see a family reunited after so much suffering. On the drive home, he said he’d gotten taken in winter and now it was summer.
Scientists have deep concerns about one of the world’s leading climate standards-setting groups, the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
@emilypont.bsky.social writes about a new whistleblower reports that raises serious questions about the group’s transparency and governance:

In a nutshell, the ANES data shows:
📉 Social media use is shrinking; engagement collapsing
💥 Twitter/X posting has moved ~70 POINTS to the right
🧩 Platforms are splintering
🔊 Fewer people are talking — but those still talking are more politically extreme
THAT'S RIGHT REPUBLICANS
The implicit media consensus is that urban voters should not be able to overrule rural voters, but that rural voters should be able to overrule urban voters, an assumption so axiomatic and unquestionable that nobody even understands they're making it.
Let’s use the majorities this (and other things) will enable to pass an election law bill in 2029 that will outlaw political gerrymandering nationwide.
(TBC, this is a gloss on Melissa’s post, not an argument with it!)
I really hope the let's address our problems with promises to do a bipartisan, hype "rule of law" and the Constitution, get that what people want is an actual fight against fascism. That's the pole for your desired "big tent:" confrontation against this horrific regime not moderated pablum.
The YES has won in Virginia; voters approved the constitutional amendment to adopt Dems' congressional gerrymander.
This is likely to deliver a 10-1 (Dem) congressional delegation in November, compared to 6-5 (Dem) now.
The remaining obstacle: State supreme court will be weighing in still.
How handsomely was he paid for this empty endorsement that R Mainers will outright ignore “because he’s a Dem.”
"Few approve of how Donald Trump is handling the cost of living" – Overall: 33-67 – Immigration: 40-59 – Iran: 32-67 – Economy: 30-70 – Cost of living: 23(!)-76 "The nationwide poll was conducted April 16-20, 2026 using the AmeriSpeak® Panel, the probability-based panel of NORC at the University of Chicago. Online and telephone interviews using landlines and cell phones were conducted with 2,596 adults. The overall margin of sampling error is +/- 3.4 percentage points."
There's no other way to say it: This AP-NORC poll is atrocious for Trump.
– Overall: 33-67
– Immigration: 40-59
– Iran: 32-67
– Economy: 30-70
– Cost of living: 23(!)-76
37% of Republicans disapprove of his handling of the economy, 47% disapprove on cost of living.

one of the ways the mid to late 20th century political world has distorted the historical memories of even sophisticated observers is in the idea that you can achieve major transformations of american political life through something like bipartisan consensus
thank you so much virginia
once again eat shit VAGOP
Thirteen U.S. troops died trying to get these people to safety — Afghan interpreters, soldiers, and the families of our service members. Veterans spent sleepless nights during the chaotic withdrawal fighting to keep them alive. Now our own government is going to abandon them.
Relax and enjoy is one of the greatest parts of realizing “birds!” And to be clear I’m very happy to welcome all the 30s-birders into the flock lol.
I can’t (I sure can lol) believe people have pivoted to defending “just miss your flight it’s fine” guy out of a mix of posting contrarianism and literally not reading the mentions where he shruggo admits it’s not on his dime.
Will, you posted so hot you’ve missed the important detail that James does not pay this out of pocket, his work does. None of it is his concern. And if he was so laissez faire about his own money in those amounts he could at least then humble complain about having to fly chartered.
Wine industry person here in Napa. Wine sales are declining even across wealthier brands because normal people cannot afford to splurge on wine. The wine industry is suffering because of idiots like Aravind Srinivas and every wealthy executive. Go to hell. We hate you.
