Great meeting you as well!

My understanding is that natural sinks absorb 50~55% of human GHG emissions. I never heard that it was a low as 38%. (Maybe GWP assumptions?)
Also, that's not the "big picture". The big picture is the Earth Energy Imbalance (EEI). GHG is one part of that. Aerosols & albedo play a big role too.

Why is 1-1.9 forbidden while the others are not?
And note we are tracking 8.5 climate *forcing* even if we are not tracking 8.5 emissions. The forcing is what matters.
Doing SRM requires that we phase out emissions. Even without SRM, it is required that we phase out emissions. There is a difference between what we are required to do and what we will do. That's why we are facing a climate crisis!
With your logic, you can say don't do emissions reduction (ER) until we get SRM going. ER won't work (keep us under +2ºC) without SRM so why bother doing it on its own?
While I'm being facetious, the point is we need all 3 & CDR will take time to scale & SRM needs more research before deployment.
Termination shock (TS) assumes we do nothing to lower & remove emissions. If we choose to fail, we will. If we choose to succeed, that includes SRM. We are guaranteed TS-level temps if we don't do SRM. SRM also lowers emissions.
We have discussed TS in the past:

There are 3 main climate solutions: Emissions Reduction, CDR & SRM. Why are you blaming 2 solutions (that we aren't doing yet) for our failure to do the 1st one? How about blaming politicians, FF execs, the media, the public, etc.?
All 3 are needed for survival, so let's push all of them!
David, you are invited on Climate Chat!
But the implication in your article is we should focus on 1 climate solution (emissions reduction-ER) when 2 more are *also* needed: CDR & SRM. There is no fixed budget for saving civilization. Funding for CDR & SRM should not reduce ER efforts.
I had a great discussion today with Cornell's Doug MacMartin on Sunlight Reflection Methods (SRM). From how & when to do it, impacts, to the types of planes we can use. Long, but you will learn a lot about the technology we need to avoid catastrophe.

I'm not OK at all with kicking the can down the road. See my climate action plan below.
The sad truth is, at this point, that reduction-only will not keep us below 3ºC, let alone 2ºC, nor will it enable us to avoid tipping points such as AMOC collapse. We need reduction, CDR & SRM to stay safe.
So, you're Ok with going over +2ºC of warming (and likely 3ºC) & crossing tipping points? At this point, emissions reduction & CDR alone cannot keep us safe.
You need to compare the risk of *doing* SRM with the risk of *Not doing* SRM.

Yes, we need these things. But it is unlikely that voluntary personal choices will have much impact of global GHG emissions, though it could help a little bit. What we need are *polices* that transform our food systems, stop deforestation & phase out fossil fuels.
I gave a talk last week to the Healthy Planet Action Coalition (HPAC) on my 20-point climate action plan. Here is a recording of that talk.

It’s getting closer…
Yes. While we may not be following the RCP8.5 *emissions* pathway, we are following the RCP8.5 *climate forcing* pathway! As James Hansen has been pointing out, ECS (climate sensitivity) is likely 50% higher than the IPCC assumes so we are on track for RCP8.5 warming (or more!).
Thanks. This is a far more useful graph to see what is going on with emissions (and energy growth).
That’s great, but you can’t tell that from the graph.
