Mayor Frey justifies evictions of unhoused neighbors by saying it is in public interest, predicated on victim blaming narratives and stigma. Encampments are not the cause of harm. Rather, they are targets of harm and the result of harms that already exist. Encampments are a symptom of systemic injustice; a source of resident-made interim stability borne out of necessity. They are a result of structural abandonment and policy choices. When a school shooting takes place, we don't blame students and shutter schools. We ask, "How can we create safer schools?" But when encampments are targeted with violence, Mayor Frey blames unhoused neighbors and evicts them. Nenookaasi residents filed a lawsuit, saying this is not only morally wrong, but violates their legal rights.

The hearing on Monday will determine whether we go to trial or if the judge will dismiss the case. If the case goes to trial, it will take place in December. If the judge dismisses the case, we may appeal.
