They can have feelings. Like they can be upset that they were upsetting you. They cannot understand how it was bothering you. They can be upset that now they have to change something.

But they have to respect your feelings and work to change their behavior if they want to stay in your life

So I say take the time that you need figure out how you are feeling and then talk to that person. They do not have a right be upset at the time it took you to understand those feelings. They do not get to have an opinion on your needs for processing.

In my opinion it is totally natural for you to need time to recognize that something someone is doing is bothering or upsetting you. Especially if you have any kind of neurodiversity. Because then you have to parse out whether the feelings you are having are "my normal" or a misunderstanding.
