Little children are in league with the ghosts that live in their mouths; and when they eat dirt it is to make them a garden, and when they chew toys it is to play

it is devastating to notice how few benches there are in the world and how some benches have been replaced by weird "leaning" things. the world is incredibly cruel to disabled, elderly, poor, pregnant, tired, homeless, and all people. there should be benches fucking everywhere for everyone

I wonder if, on some level, the grapevine can sense that the geometry of the trellis is wrong; perhaps it believes it's climbing some eternal, rhizomatous tree, beyond the canny world, in the heaven where branched things merge again

the best thing I did (for myself) today was to check on my plants & say hello to them while the sun rose.

the deer & bunnies (& who knows what else) that graze in our suburban neighborhood have avoided those plants as well as rosemary, sage, & silver mounding artemisia (so far). I was told deer don’t like bee balm or coneflower, but something is munching on those plants. rude!

pleased to report the lavender, catmint, yarrow, and creeping phlox I planted earlier this week seem to be settling in well for the most part.

West Virginia had a former coal executive lead our Dept of Environmental Protection for years. He gave permit exceptions to a Rockwool plant between 2 schools and the Mountain Valley Pipeline among others.

I am terrified for our public lands.

Little computers, as numerous as the leaves, glow from every crevice. They smear us with their meaningless blue gleam; but soon, their season will end. They will flicker. They will pass from this world, and we will comb dead wires from our hair

Our friends at Firestorm are struggling in the face of disaster capitalism. A queer- and worker-owned bookstore that has, over and over, been there for the community.

They let me set up a referral page with them. Books from my podcasts, my books, and books I love

As the commandos landed on the objective, U.S. warplanes dropped bombs whose bright orange blasts lit up the silhouettes of the surrounding mountains. From his hiding place, the weapons officer alerted his rescuers to the areas they should target for strikes, where he could see Iranians advancing, one senior military official said. The commandos fired their weapons ferociously to keep any Iranians in the area from advancing toward them.

Business card that says
"that book is about how he thinks Appalachian people are subhuman degenerates
JD VANCE IS NOT FROM APPALACHIA
he doesn't have significant ties to the region
the title of his book even calls us a slur
Please read ISBN 9780998904146 instead"

Another beautiful, seasonally too warm morning waking up in a world run by absolute losers who have never experienced love. Being alive is amazing!

"While Big Bird was doing wheelies around Rush on his tiny quad bike, in the true spirit of St Patrick’s Day, the Fianna Fáil leader once again sought to cement Ireland’s status as an ally of a country that, a matter of weeks ago, blew up a primary school full of Iranian children."

I did absolutely fuck all (or is it fuck-all?) today except snuggle these ridiculous(ly adorable) dogs. we did just take them on a walk & it’s so nice out!

our beloved wee Monty died aged 16 just 5 months ago & a thing I was somehow completely unprepared for these past few weeks was the fresh new wave of grief that’s hit. I’m not sure we deserve dogs & I feel very lucky to have known & loved some very special ones. (I think all dogs are very special.)

photo of Charlie, a 17lb rat terrier, lying on sofa facing away from but leaning against his human (out of frame). his front left leg is dangling off the edge of the sofa & he’s on top of a camo-print blanket because it’s unseasonably warm for early March. his chest and stomach are covered with white fur, but he has large patches of black fur on his back.

we adopted Charlie 3 weeks ago yesterday. he’s very friendly & has a charming spring in his step! likes: sitting on shoulders, barking at squirrels, snuggling. dislikes: storms. he has some health issues. he’s very grumbly, in an adorable way. we think he’ll keep us. ❤️

The most useful political distinction to pay attention to in my experience is asking whether children and young adults are most likely to suffer harm from people inside or outside their family. Only people who say “inside” are sensitive to power dynamics that matter
