Ed sighed. The sun was shining stupidly. The road stretched out in front of her like a long dusty trough, winding above the disgustingly picturesque seaside town that was spread out below the rocky cliffs. Queen Anne vibrated beneath her, and the crowd roared like television static. Ed closed her eyes and envisioned turning the dial to something pleasant, [artist] or fuck, just birds chirping or even silence. But no fucking dice. Just static. The same static that was always there lately, underneath it all. Ed opened her eyes and glanced over at the competition. Jack, fucking Jack tossed her (teased to the sky) hair and shimmied her shoulders, shot Ed a look that was probably supposed to be sultry, but just looked like she had something stuck in her sticky spiderweb mascara. “Get ready to choke on my fumes, Eddie!” she yelled over the roar, astride her bike, an absolute junker that looked like it had crashed into a few concrete barriers on its way here. Ed rolled her eyes, then patted her trusty purple bike—she kept Queen Anne pristine and shiny, as befits a queen—and revved the engine a few times for show. All for the show. And then it was time. The flag came down and they were off.
