What the hell does this mean?! Why are there so many curves??

Language Circles indicate a key frame, underline indicates a Breakdown Curves like this indicate the drawings are spaced evenly in halves Curves like this indicate the drawings are spaced in thirds, so it favors one drawing over the other. Do notice how this curve points at nothing. It means there's more empty space between these drawings as opposed to the other without the empty space.

That's all you need to start making charts, so, let's start by imagining your two keys, you are thinking about a head turn, that lasts a second, so 24 frames. Let's also consider we will be animating in 2's, so every drawing will be held for 2 frames. So our first drawing will be in frames 1-2 and our last drawing will be in frame 23-24 Let's draw our chart and mart the beginning and end.

And now let's mark every frame there will be a drawing. That's 12 drawings in total. 10 drawings between 1 and 23. Good! Basically, spacing charts just mark the space BETWEEN each key drawing, it's a language that the key animators/directors use to tell the IN-BETWEENERS where to draw things. Now, let's keep imagining that head turn... Let's say you need it to start fast, and end slow. So, how will you ARRANGE THE SPACE BETWEEN ALL THESE DRAWINGS TO ACHIEVE THAT?

Spacing charts are a language, their purpose is indicating how drawings will be SPACED in a given timeline, they are given to inbetweeners (animators that do inbetweens) by directors/key animators.

Even when producing your own stuff, they are important to utilize.
