Living in the PNW has taught me exactly how important respiratory protection is during fire season. I have chronic respiratory issues that makes symptoms of exposure more clear, but it is dangerous for everyone and holy shit. You do not want that in your lungs.

Every time major conference season rolls around I have to decide if going and trying to claw back my position in the field I had worked so hard to establish myself in is worth the risk of losing even more to my disabilities. So far it never has been, but… god, I wish. I wish I could.

I’m glad you said something, those posts/feelings are valid but they’ve got my isolated ass feeling all sorts of lonely today. Year seven…

This, and losing the friends who might mask for /you/ but otherwise don’t dgaf about any other transmission vectors and get/give Covid casually. Even if I could trust they won’t hurt me… I want my people to believe in community care & real inclusivity that isn’t tied to disclosures of health status.

Yeah given they took the time to take their gear off it feels like activism. And it hurts the birds in its idiocy.

I would bet it could be. Just because smells are so much more salient signals when they indicate something might be dangerous. Probably an adaptive curve to paying a lot more attention to those stimuli.

Accompanying a picture of Galadriel going sicko mode, being all tempestuous as the sea and shit:

"A Brief Note ABout Sexism In Silicon Valley

A Palantir cannot see the future:
•	It is basically a magical livestream
•	They were made by the Dunadein (men)
•	They can be tricked easily
•	The worst thing they do is wreck Pippin, that fool of a Took

The Mirror of Galadriel can see the past, the present, and the future:
•	Shit predates Sauron
•	Made by elves, probably
•	You put that ring in it and game over
•	It can see futures that have not yet come to be

So which did these dummies go with for their company name?"

Been annoyed by this for forever, even put it in my Securities Regulation slides

I wonder if there’s a way to set this up for success where he can’t charge them? Like if there was a way to contain him and they could have free access so they could feel safe? I feel like a normal travel crate would be too small though, hmmm. In will noodle on the idea.

Yeah, I would just had to be sure that they have multiple options for Up, so they don’t feel like they can be cornered or trapped and have freedom of movement.

Eventually, I mean. If they’re able to share space and just ignore each other, that’s a good place to allow them to work from, if you can get there.

You could try bigger gate with a blanket maybe? So they can smell and hear each other, but not see… that might help your cats feel less anxious. I think coexisting without wanting to interact, but not being unhappy about it, might be the next thing to aim for? If they can be in the same room calmly.

Make it look like one of those purplish-clear Game Boy Colors and I'm sold

This. I think people always want intros to happen in like half the time the animals need.

I love him.

I’ve heard of folk having a lot of good success swapping blankets or items with each other’s smell on them. I’ve also had friends say Feliway diffusers really helped, although I can’t vouch personally.

Many people get this wrong! The correct word for putting your body in a horizontal position is "lie." The past tense of that is "lay." What you never get when you point this out is "laid"

Merlin keeps telling me I have cedar waxwings but I don’t believe it.

My starlings are forgiven because they mimic bald eagles and it’s hilarious when the sweet tweeting trails off into gargling noises.

Frustratingly that’s why it’s so hard to get off label! Nobody has done trials for how long the efficacy lasts so my PCP won’t give it to me in my mid 30’s because it might wear off when I’m 70. It also might not, we have no fucking idea. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

🚨New preprint and our results are rather concerning..

We find the "boiling frog" equivalent of AI use. Using large-scale RCTs, we provide *casual* evidence that AI assistance reduces persistence and hurts independent performance.

And these effects emerge after just 10–15 minutes of AI use!

I accidentally let my tomato seedlings get too dry and they looked unrecoverable, but with a little bit of water and hope they’ve almost all rebounded and look healthy and perky again.

feeling like you want to try and reduce human suffering today? even if we, as an individual, can’t do everything we wish we could, we can do more than pretend everything is fine—wear a respirator and break some denial today.

I was just thinking about these! They were delicious if you liked gnawing on slightly worse than normal sugar cubes.
