tl;dr: NIH is running at about 60% of pre-Trump levels and NSF is running at about 20% of pre-Trump levels of funding-outlays (some directorates far below even that). Utterly catastrophic. An unforced disaster for U.S. society, and the world

At ~$1 billion/day, the US has spent as much on the war in Iran in ten days as the entire FY25 budget for the National Science Foundation ($10 billion).
Trump's FY26 budget request for the agency declined to $3.9 billion, due to a "realignment of resources in a constrained fiscal environment."
Graph of award probability of R35 and R01 from NIH factbook as a function of review rank percentile. As is apparent, 2025 is a significant departure, with lower award probabilities at all scores <40 and significant departures from norm, where even being in the top 10% is no longer a nearly certain indicator of success. Data source: https://report.nih.gov/nihdatabook/report/302
The data is in: the NIH goalposts have shifted.
What were once almost certain fundable scores have become coin flips and what used to be likely grants have become aspirational, leading to fewer awards.
Another manifestation of how HHS policies have led to fewer awards and less science.

Are you a neuroscientist with great coding skills, or a software engineer interested in the brain?
We are recruiting for a research software engineer to help us build pipelines to process weeks of neural and behavioural recordings from freely moving animals.

With this war on Iran costing $1B per day, we are now at 4$B, an amount that would fund 3,200 five year NIH biomedical research grants.

Not explicitly no. In my experience as an applicant these grants don’t score well. They will need specific FOAs focused on cross-species studies imo to be successful.
Dream job
Please stop saying the bill allows "no more multi-year funding" - or at least be clear the 'more' is in reference to disastrous FY25 levels.
The bill allows 39% MYF, same as in FY25, which contributed substantially to a 24% drop in new research.
The bill has some wins. MYF is not one of them.
Whittier in south Minneapolis was filled with visitors and residents attending vigils on Sunday.
“People are showing up and this is one of the most incredible and resilient places,” one resident said. “It’s special, and I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.”
ICE sleeps somewhere. ICE buys food and beverages. ICE rents vehicles. ICE uses bathrooms. ICE buys fuel. Deny ICE access to food, beverages, fuel, bathrooms, and beds.
State and local officials have urged a federal judge to issue an immediate order that would temporarily halt the massive deportation operation in Minnesota.
The matter is scheduled for a hearing at 9 a.m. Monday.

Three Democrats who previously broke with the party and voted with the GOP are now saying they will not vote for the bill. That’s enough for the bill to be unpassable right now.
As tens of thousands across America protest the violence that ICE sows with impunity, federal agents shot and killed another person in Minneapolis today. ICE terrorizes our cities. ICE puts us all in danger. Abolish ICE.
in case you're curious about how angry Minnesota is about ICE, it was -20 today
Email your Representative and Senators before Jan 30. Ask them to "Adopt Sections 239 and 531 of the Senate LHHS Bill" to restore incremental funding and ensure timely grant awards at the NIH. Prevent a "grant drought" for our field this year.

The appropriations bill that includes NIH is being finalized.
The Senate bill includes a bipartisan amendment from Senators Capito (WV) and Baldwin (WI) limiting multi-year funding of grants.
The House version does not and OMB has issued a veto threat if the House includes such language.

You and your lab are rockstars!
Was a honor to give this SfN Special Lecture & share 10 yrs of work from the lab on its 10th anniversary! Thankful to the incredible lab members, collaborators & participant volunteers who made this work possible. Link to video recording here👇

For decades, imaging has forced the same trade-off:
Set a frame rate → sacrifice resolution or field of view to go fast.
We break that rule
Using an EVENT-BASED CAMERA, we record neural activity without frames. Signals are captured only where and when they occur:
