More health lost than gained from NHS spending on new medicines NICE's cost-effectiveness threshold for new drugs is £20,000-£30,000 per extra year of health, higher than the NHS's usual £15,000 spend for the same result.

Some quick calculations on the cost (£) of one 'additional year of good health' for comparison:

1. NHS spend on new drugs 2000-2020: ~£20,000
2. Existing NHS services: ~£15,000
3. Public health interventions (& wider determinants): ~£3,800

On the devolution white paper: diamonds in the rough or fool’s gold? What are we to make of the recent devolution white paper1? On the one hand there is bold ambition in the expansion of a sub-regional level of governance and a desire to move towards co-terminosity…

Firstly, almost everyone in public health knows exactly how you feel! Nurture your networks, know who your 'go to' experts are and don't think you have to have all the answers all the time. You bring loads of other amazing skills. And even generalist people have a USP!

Here's my version of a graph originally by the British Liver Trust showing how rates of liver disease deaths in England & Wales have almost quadrupled since 1968, while other leading causes of death have fallen.

In spite of working in alcohol research for 13+ years, this still surprised me...

A great bit of analysis here. In a super-tough environment we need to keep going up stream and ask what we can do to act earlier. And reach for evidence to back up the case. And use theories of change to work through what the right blend and scale of interventions is to shift outcomes.

Vaccines Will Have to Prove Themselves Again. The Hard Way.

The American clinical trial has about 22 million children aged 0–5. It’s not double-blind

it does feature a placebo arm: the kids of vaccine-hesitant moms
