Found this on the anniversary of the 19th Amendment's Ratification. Coincidence? In any case, sharing to highlight a resource I was begging for at the start of my DPhil: an interactive women's suffrage map! GREAT way to visualize the growth of women's suffrage! depts.washington.edu/moves/WomanS...
pleasantly surprised with how Chief of War has shown the Pacific World so far. Really expected them to gloss over Ka'iana's time with the trading ship — instead we're getting treated to a full look at just how wide and interconnected it was! Jumping from Alaska to the Philippines in one episode.
We’re advertising for a 12 month teaching post in 20th Century US History. Deadline 28/7 (a short turn around because we need to interview in mid-August).
We’re a great, collegial and fun US history community. Happy to answer any and all questions about the role, and the RAI Bake Off.
rinse and repeat with the other forts; Fort RE Lee —> Ft Gregg-Adams —> Ft (Fitz) Lee, medal of honor recipient for service in the Spanish-American War
They did — Admin. has claimed a loophole which means that the bases still won't be named for the Confederates...but other soldiers who share the same names as them. My quote was referring to Ft AP Hill specifically — no longer for Ambrose Powell Hill but 3 union soldiers named Anderson, Pine, & Hill
Happy Jeanette Rankin Day! We could use some Congressional courage atm.

Call me crazy, but I really can't imagine that Union soldiers would love the idea of their names being used as a political football to honor a Confederate at the expense of Union surgeon!!!!
With record-breaking speed for my podcast, I got to cover Sinners on Flashback! Was so lucky to meet Tammy in the wake of this fantastic movie and have this conversation with her about the power of music in telling and shaping our histories.
Feels a bit absurd to be promoting this, but there's a 12 month 18/19th C American history post at Cardiff. Deadline 15.06.25. Feel free to msg or contact me via email - doddingtond@cardiff.ac.uk - for further information: krb-sjobs.brassring.com/TGnewUI/Sear...
Brits however may enjoy this as a rage listen to stew over while enjoying the late May bank holiday
Need some lightly-themed Memorial Day listening? Flashback's episode on the Patriot is out now! A lot of fun with this one, and was joined by the fantastic Krysten Blackstone — a historian of soldiers' lived experiences and morale in the Revolution!
Such a fun ep! If you enjoyed Fraser in any of his other fish-out-of-water premises, definitely check this one out for a hefty dose of 60s and 90s nostalgia. And Christopher Walken and Sissy Spacek as a delightful married couple and accidental cult leaders!
in WHAT world would I want an "ai assistant" to pop up over being able to access the damn table of contents in an ebook. Proquest has got to be kidding
One of the more interesting watches for the podcast — and then an equally great record with @benwillis.bsky.social unpacking its relationship to Lincoln, the Civil War, and of course, vampires and the slave power. Out now wherever you get your podcasts!
The Faculty of History and the RAI are delighted to announce that expressions of interest are now invited for the Harmsworth Visiting Professorship of American History for the academic years 2027-28, 2028-29, and 2029-30. Details: www.rai.ox.ac.uk/vacancies.
hopefully if enough people raise enough hell we can get them to change their minds!
and finally a cheeky @jlappen1.bsky.social shout out to hopefully get more Californian eyes on this!!
members of the budget subcommittees (senate subcommittees 1 and 3), or their chairs — Senators Laird and AM Alvarez — and have suggest the following as a sample statement of support:
Really can't say enough about the CDNC (housed at UC Riverside) — it helped me significantly flesh out my thesis and I recommend it to my students constantly. It should continue to receive state support!!! The folks at the CDNC are asking people to write their support of the collection to (cont)
Morning inbox check revealed some dismaying news: the CA state legislature's proposed 2026 budget has cut funding for the California Digital Newspaper Collection. This is such an important resource — and per its director will go offline if it does not receive its typical state support 🗃️🧵
This week in history, 1911: thousands of residents line the streets of New York to attend the funeral of the victims of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. The blaze, which broke out on March 25, claimed the lives of 146 people, mostly women.

Lucy Stone in bloomers 1853 - image from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucy_Stone
Abolitionist and woman suffragist Lucy Stone came through Louisville in 1853 as part of a lecture tour of MO, IN and WV. In her Bloomer costume, Stone gave three speeches, with thousands packing the halls each night. Orators in the suffrage movement bragged of a good event as "a Kentucky welcome."
This episode was SO much fun to record with Emily — really my ideal for the pod, chatting with friends about movies we love!! And an episode about the early 2010s as much as it is about the 1920s. Listen now!
ICYMI, last week we published an interactive map of more than $300 billion worth of Inflation Reduction Act and bipartisan infrastructure law funding. Enter your ZIP code or city and a search radius and find projects in your area:

Considering dropping the weekly hint format for the next season, but if I do I'm glad I got to go out on this one tbh
historical literacy issues abound but sometimes you just go back to the classics: or, what people think "victorian" is
“The Maryland National Guard must decline events which celebrates individuals based all or in part on immutable characteristics,” the memo said.
Douglass was an abolitionist, suffragist, orator and author. That’s what we celebrate him. Let’s be clear: This bars celebrating him because he was Black.
time to check bluesky for my daily dose of news anxiety ☕️ and now back to writing

Tomorrow I am spending 2 hours transcribing documents for the Library of Congress in honor of Frederick Douglas' birthday celebration. Anybody can do this online.
