I still cannot figure out, however, why it’s still around and why it’s a thing. Michelob bottles were big in Mn when I was a kid. Maybe there’s a weird heritage. No one drank Grain Belt except the pros until the late 90s, when it became counterculture cool — grunge-era ethos. (I love Premium.)

MGD came first, and Mich Golden tried to replicate. It stuck— but only in Minnesota and parts of the Dakotas. Mich did a fantastic marketing job by sponsoring every damn north woods lake bar and town festival. The ribbed cans also were key.
