This version focuses on the religious and democratic implications of my dissertation project.
Thank you to everyone who attended and all the committee members for selecting it for this award. I’m very proud of this work, and I look forward to sharing more about it after my Monday defense.

Delighted to announce that I have been awarded the Graduate Research Prize by the Midwest Region American Academy of Religion at the annual conference in Cincinnati.
My presentation and paper was titled “An Appeal to Heaven: Spiritual Warfare Rhetoric, and Democratic Strain in Digital Ministry.“
You don’t get to add “but” to this sentence.
Always a good time judging the OCLRE Ohio High School Mock Trial competition, but being able to participate in my first Championship Round judges panel was quite a treat.
Congratulations to Archbishop Hoban and St. Xavier on advancing to the finals.
Another early morning flight CMH > STL > MSP.

I think about this @johngreensbluesky.bsky.social video about Psalm 109 at least once a day. It brings me so much joy.

I’m happy to share that I’ve was inducted into Alpha Sigma Nu, the national Jesuit honor society, last week in Omaha.
I’m grateful for the mentors, colleagues, and students who have shaped my work and made this recognition possible.
Makes total sense! I went from my adrenaline rush of online play to getting into those single player narrative games. Went through Fallout, Mass Effect, Farcry 5 & 6, and the Bioshock series within 2 years.
It took me until probably four years ago to play the series and it’s fantastic. As a former exclusive sports gamer I had an amazing catalog to catchup on. Have fun! It’s a blast.
First time with the series?
Section Chair @jlkucinskas.bsky.social joined a panel in the Netherlands on administrative ethics. The session examined the moral responsibility of civil servants in liberal democracies, 40 years after Dennis Thompson’s landmark PAR article. Organized by The Netherlands Institute of Governance.
As a former campaign comms person seeing this email makes me think “there but for the grace of God, go I”
We met up with @sssreligion.bsky.social recently in Minneapolis, Minnesota to ask "What Are You Working On?" Meet emerging scholars and familiar faces working on all things religious scholarship!
Collegeville, MN rules so hard y'all.
I think I just experienced the most engaging and theoretically impressive presidential address in my career from @ruthbraunstein.bsky.social at the annual meeting for the @sssreligion.bsky.social.
Legit masterful. Wish y'all could have experienced it.
If anyone wants to say hello or grab a coffee (I'm always down for a coffee -- the caffeine it does nothing) send me a DM or connect with me on LinkedIn. I've been wanting to build a brainstorming and writing community to help develop co-authors and other thought partners in this field.
Also, special shout of to all those at the Networking Lunch especially those sitting at Table 8: Evangelicalism, Christian Nationalism, and Politics! I'll be there ready to learn and enjoy my final conference as a student participant.
Hello! I'm coming up from the dissertation bunker to say that if you will be at SSSR I'll be putting together some fun Bluesky content with @dacuetovilla.bsky.social for the @asareligion.bsky.social account. COME TELL US WHAT YOU'RE WORKING ON. We'd love to amplify some voices.
The Department of Sociology at the University of Virginia invites applications for a tenured Associate or Full Professor position specializing in the sociology of religion. We are particularly interested in a theoretically engaged scholar whose work addresses religious pluralism in complex modern societies, the relationship between religion, civic engagement, and democratic political cultures, the social and economic impact of religion from a cultural and historical perspective. Relevant questions may include but are not limited to: how does religion shape cultural and political conflicts? How does religion relate not only to political participation but to the shaping of collectives? How do different understandings of the sacred inform the development of, and dispute over, morality? For additional information about our dynamic department, please visit https://sociology.as.virginia.edu/. For questions regarding this position, please contact Isaac Reed, Search Chair, at iar2c@virginia.edu.

The nice folks at @npr.org gave me a minute of their air to talk about Dilexi Te.
Listen to: Pope Leo XIV is drawing the world's attention to poverty - one.npr.org/i/nx-s1-5563...
So you can imagine my excitement to hear that he and Rev. Susan Hayward are launching American Unexceptionalism, a new series exploring how people of faith around the world resist religious nationalism and authoritarianism. It premieres October 23 and will be must listen as well!
When I was planning my dissertation he took time to talk through ideas and share his insight, which meant a lot. His podcast Charismatic Revival Fury was a must listen on my trips to and from Omaha over the past few years.
Many of you know how much @matthewdtaylor.bsky.social’s work shaped my research on spiritual warfare. His book The Violent Take It By Force is essential reading.
Pope Leo has given us his first teaching document today. It gives no comfort to the Napa Institute, billionaires, or anybody who wants a powerful or integralist church.
This below is the takeaway.
We go on in Francis's direction.
