If, as educators we want to be innovative, we must strive to do things better. We just can't keep adding things to our plates. Occasionally we need to remove some of the things on the plate and replace them with even better things. It’s about refinement.

Not exactly the fairytale ending she was expecting...
Retrieved from The Poet Tree 🌲 in the nearby Fisherman's Beach reserve and now nestled in my writer's notebook. A poem for Robert Louis Stevenson.
If Shakespeare were here now, he might say this regarding a certain overinflated leader- 'You speak an infinite deal of nothing.'
I have written for a lifetime
Used a swimming pool of ink
Yet I've only scratched the surface
There's more to learn I think

Overheard:
'There's more to singing than screaming and screeching at a pitched level so that only dogs can hear you!'
'The compact between writing and walking is almost as old as literature—a walk is only a step away from a story, and every path tells.'
Robert Macfarlane
For those starting out with a writer's notebook, a walk remains a worthy stimulus for thinking. Thinking that leads to writing.

Help kids narrow the gap between their intentions and actions. Nudge them to read what they wish to write. Read books that inform the writing that will emerge. To write horror stories, they should be reading horror stories. If poetry is their passion, reading poetry is essential.

If I want students to adopt writing as a meaningful part of learning I need to demonstrate the value of being someone who chooses to write.
'In order to stimulate the observational skills of student writers, teachers must be keen and close observers of the world in which they wander. Bring the outside in. Shine a light. Curiosity is infectious.'

I'm on Mari's team...
'I like writing. When everything else gets too difficult and confusing, I can retreat to my desk and play with the muddle and despair and curiosity, and knit it into paragraphs. '
