Unremarkable winter landscape, until you notice the pathways in the snow and recognize signs of a turkey parade, and the deer tracks breaking the surface.

I posted a similar question (pre-covid) to the DSA twitter account and...crickets. Happy to see this topic being taken up, and taken seriously.

Sometimes fishing happens elsewhere. Wandering the stacks can lead to some unexpected finds. Casting far has its benefits on occasion.

After years of seeking I finally found my spirit animal.

It's a challenge. I don't think any of us intend to be 'greedy' it's just that not everyone approaches water with the respect and recognition of the fragility of some of these smaller streams.

A small stream in upstate New York. Home to a native brook trout population.

A small stream in upstate New York. Home to a native brook trout population.

Had a discussion the other night with some folks about proprietary feelings towards streams. In my mind this is my stream. Difficult, a bit unruly- maybe even cantankerous at moments. #flyfishing #streams

Synchronicity is a thing. Flagged this quote yesterday: "One might perhaps carry the consideration of
the subject yet further, and dilate much on the
peculiar effects of different kinds of streams in
influencing one’s whole frame of thought and idea" from Cutcliffe "The Art of Trout Fishing etc."

From a few years back-from a clinic for lobster divers in Bilwi, Nicaragua. Right about now we’d be prepping for our annual service learning trip, but COVID and the deteriorating political situation in Nicaragua put an end to those trips. Missing our friends and colleagues on the Atlantic coast.

One of the issues we had was basically poor record keeping. We planted a lot but couldn’t remember where. I think what I found was from root plantings- seeds seem more challenging. And yes the erratic weather adds a whole other level of challenge-but keep the faith! You may find some this summer.

I recently re-encountered this quote from Aldo Leopold: “One of the penalties of an ecological education is that one lives alone in a world of wounds”. In light of all that is happening lately (wildfires , hurricanes, etc) I wonder if we'll be less lonely now, as harsh realities impact more people.

Watersheds …not sure where I’m going with this but the Susquehanna valley ties me, up here in NY, to you all. Need a regional gathering, or maybe one exists and I’m not aware?

I've been thinking a lot lately of the spaces where we practice(d) democracy and what that looks like now. My goto's are unions, the Grange and food co-ops (of the late 70's to early 80's). I recently interviewed someone who mentioned (some) community gardens as a space of democratic practice.

American ginseng with berries

A few years ago we planted some ginseng in a sugar bush on a friends farm. Looks like some of what we seeded succeeded (apologies, couldn't resist).

After 17 years I finally pulled the plug on Twitter/X. It was past due but hard to cut the cord. Made many connections over those years. Hoping to re-connect and develop some new connections. We'll be needing strong networks for the coming years.
Wish I felt a bit more hopeful than I do right now.
