I think much of what universities *can be* is ruined by the fact that so so so many people are pressured to go who shouldn't have to!

I guess what I'm saying is that I should really read Pedagogy Of The Oppressed.

It's hard to change these cultural attitudes towards education. University is so much fun if you go for the right reasons. I want people who don't want university to not be forced to go by a gate keeping job market...

It's not "networking" it's "being in community".

Most skills used for any job are *really* learned in the first few months of being at that job, not from ones university education (though it's still important! I'm not denying that at all!) Therefore... we should be working in community early.

Often in my university days I felt let down by fellow students who only participated between themselves, their grade, and the material presented. I felt like part of what I was paying for was supposed to be my peers.

This extends to the kind of programs/community your talking about.

Obv it is a small piece of the puzzle, but as a fairly recent graduate I also want to place the blame on students and not just the structure of modern universities.

University students are Adults who should be going in order to participate in education. (Not "receive an education", participate)

Ludic Prose - A different way to look at gamefeel - Jade Britzman
Ludic Prose - A different way to look at gamefeel - Jade Britzman YouTube video by Technically Games

Back in September I did my first ever conference talk. It was a 5 minute lightning talk problematising “game feel” and offering an alternative framework for discussing the texture of games; for practitioners, critics, and academics alike.

You can now watch it here!

I want to live the kind of life that earns me eulogies like that.

I feel like this thing makes a sort of bubbly sound as it zooms past

I sorta wanna polish off the final patch quests of FFXIV Endwalker, but I’m still in game married to my ex and also the game kinda makes me sad now…

And I left my FC ugh… man.. it’s frustratingly poetic to not quite be able to walk to the end of Endwalker due to life falling apart unexpectedly

That’s nice :)

One thing I believe more and more as I push myself creatively is that you don’t need to, and nor should you, intentionally write metaphors into your work.

“Metaphors are real. Human philosophies meet nature and make metaphors”

They’ll just show up. The best ones show up, and you nurse them quietly

Sometimes I forget that I’ve interviewed three professional authors in front of an audience, each for a full hour.

I for real have interviewer experience.

How do I get to do that again?? I want to interview more! I love interviewing!!

I think so often about someone lying that they saw a woman “sorting through her food stamps” at the counter as if they are literal like, postage stamps but for food. People are just lying about seeing people exploit the system and doing so in the stupidest way possible. Bone chilling

Hmmm might be a good next read

“Keep politics out of video games” mfs when the Whitehouse is making their favourite game political.

Not that hypocrisy from the right is even like, worth pointing out any more.

I know it’s stupid to complain about spelling differences between American English and Australian/British English, but from a purely decorum point of view, American English looks baby mode.

Rationalize? Okay little buddy I know you like Zs cus they’re edgy but use an S like an adult.

Color? No. 👶

Brogue is SO cool. It’s easily the best intro to old school style rogue-likes.

Everything about it is so smooth. The fact you can make a game like that and have it feel like it has no jank whatsoever is incredible.

Truly a momentous achievement.

Connections don't mean shit. I've never had any connections that weren't a natural outgrowth of doing things I was doing anyway. Additionally, the people you might make connections with who work in the industry and value connections themselves, all those people are clueless assholes with no clout anyhow. You can tell because they think they can get somewhere with connections and spend their energy trying to make connections rather than being good at things, and being good at things is the only thing that earns you clout or connections.

It's a myth that you can get anywhere in music through connections. The guy on the other end of the connection has to be into what you're doing, and if you're doing it publicly and he's receptive, he probably hears about it on his own.

Don't worry about anything but making music you like. Everything else is bullshit.

been having the music/games 'industry' parallel on the mind all the way through games week, and that always leads back to me thinking about steve albini being essentially my standard for the kind of person i want to be in a scene/community. heres a little something from a reddit ama he did ages ago

I’ve worded it before as “never network, only engage in communities.” And by that I mean that networking is about what other people can do for you, community is what we all do for each other.

This post is a perfect example of someone wording a fundamental concept so well that for a moment it feels like you came up with it or that you always knew it, instead of having learned it right then and there.

I’m a weirdo cus my favourite Zelda is ‘A Link Between Worlds’ and you might think “oh I get it it’s the 3DS one, it must be the only one u had on ur 3DS for your age demographic.” But no I played it last year.
