How I learned Ruby on Rails by creating small projects with increasingly tough deadlines
How I learned Ruby on Rails by creating small projects with increasingly tough deadlines YouTube video by dfebs

Here's my experience with learning #RubyOnRails after working on four projects in a relatively short period of time. Still figuring out my youtube niche + voice and all that, but so far it's been fun 😀 youtu.be/634ksCN-nsA. #BuildInPublic #wedev #programming

Here I am, doing the video thing
Here I am, doing the video thing YouTube video by dfebs

I recorded five videos the past couple of months because I wanted try and regularly post Youtube content. A massive mental block stopped me from uploading anything... until now: youtu.be/WpDD1rZwk_c. It's not much, but it's definitely a start! I plan to talk about my projects in future videos :)

A web application page that has a graph and a chart for workout progress and history.

A web application page that has a graph and a chart for workout progress and history.

Sometimes my workout numbers are low on certain days (you know how it be sometimes) and it's hard to tell why. To help solve that, I added tables for my #fitness #RubyOnRails app!

Now I'm able to select the exact session where the workout happened to see if I was doing tougher stuff that day.

I looked up how to change the color of an unchecked checkbox element and it is weirdly nontrivial. I'd actually rather use the default color and then express surprise on social media instead. #webdev #programming #css

A web application showing a variety of workouts along with the days they were completed.

A web application showing a variety of workouts along with the days they were completed.

Unlike my past projects, I decided to consistently use my #RubyOnRails app like a real user (AKA #dogfooding), and it's hugely paid off.

1. The app solves a problem I have - workout tracking
2. Helps to guide project direction
3. Easier to find bugs
4. Not nearly as boring as normal manual testing

I recently did three self-appointed sessions where I talk on camera about my projects. WOW that was hard. But each session was easier than the last. Now to get through the mental hurdle of actually sharing them. In the meantime I'll keep getting the reps in. #buildinpublic #contentcreation

Been working on a web app for #fitness tracking and I got an unexpected reality check. When I added Chart.js to show my data, I realized how much I've been stagnating for almost 2 months 😅. Definitely helps remember why I'm building it in the first place. #buildinpublic #RubyOnRails #webdev

Thank you! Most likely I’ll be giving my new project 1-2 weeks of additional work and then decide what I will want to do next.

More than likely I’ll try and pick up things I’m unfamiliar with, like using email, cookies, and Hotwire Native.

I tried to complete a full Rails project in two days - it was a disaster and I'm glad I tried it. - Daniel Febles Sometimes, somehow, a fire gets lit under your butt and your path is clear. All...

You ever set yourself a goal and fail at it spectacularly because you put it off too much? This past weekend, I certainly did and I'm glad. There was plenty to reflect on and I share it here: dfebs.com/2025/08/14/1... #RubyOnRails #BuildInPublic #Procrastination #focus

Thanks! I started learning Rails early May this year, which was about a week or two before my first project in the process.

After reinventing the wheel a few times, I think I'm getting the hang of #RubyOnRails. Just a reminder to never let perfection get in the way of just getting something DONE. Even if it doesn't generate anything, it will always be valuable experience. dfebs.com/2025/08/03/1... #buildinpublic #webdev

Visual design rules you can safely follow every time

This is an excellent guide to visual design for all us non-design background developers.

I’ve been building alongside my job. Working remotely helps, as I can use time after work to decompress before jumping into whatever project I’m working on.

I work on my projects separately unless it’s really dead at work that day. In which case, that’s a great time for some free progress.

Just took an hour to do something that took me days to figure out the first time a month ago. It felt so jarring and awesome that I had to mention it on the internet 😵

The 1212 learning process - Daniel Febles In my last post, I mentioned that I would be discussing what I learned when...

For those with trepidation on starting new projects, I present the 1212 (1 month, 2 weeks, 1 weeks, 2 days) learning process! I'm currently seeing if it will actually work by writing a #RubyOnRails app as a month-long project. It will soon be followed by other projects with shorter deadlines.

Trying to work on more stuff out in the open where I #BuildInPublic. Expect to see stuff related to #pixelart, #RubyOnRails, and the occasional #DevLog!
