April is Autism Awareness Month. And as some of you might be aware, I am Autistic.

I was diagnosed at 36. I self diagnosed at around 30. Prior to that, it had never crossed my mind that I might be Autistic. As far as I know, no teacher, no adult or family member considered it either.

If you feel they might be on the spectrum, please speak to someone and look into assessment options. Give them support, let them know themselves.

If you're an adult who is considering an accessment, I'd suggest also getting therapy from someone who is trained in/knows about and or/is Autistic.

My meltdowns were quiet, and in private.

I wish someone had been able to tell me, which is why I ask, if you have a child in your life please familiarise yourself with Autistic traits (especially those in young girls, as the can look very different to what you may expect).

My childhood was uncomfortable and lonely. I struggled socially and emotionally. I found making friends extremely difficult. I had a lot of comments about how monotone I spoke.

As I grew up people told me I was really easy going, but, I just could not process my, or anyone else’s, emotions.

Yeah, we had heard the police’s intention was to stop the counter protestors marching, which is why people ended up being sprayed, and batons were out. Wild to see in real life. Makes it super clear whose side the police are on.

I also noticed that cops are fucking losers.

Something I noticed, a big number of people there were every day people. It wasn’t just young people, or punks, it was everyone. Lots of old people, people with their kids, neighbourly types. They’ve all had enough of racists pretending they’re the majority in this country, and they’re showing up.

I went to the Britain First counter protest in Manchester today.

The police stopped us marching and pepper sprayed a bunch of us. The racist scum were dramatically outnumbered though✌️

The narrator is also thoroughly unlikeable. And a man.

First big DNF of the year - Orxy and Crake - Margaret Atwood

Yes it’s dark, yes it’s bleak, but that didn’t overly bother me, what did bother me was its lack of relevance to a plot, which, 173 pages in, felt like it hadn’t begun. Found I couldn’t read more than a couple of pages before disengaging.

You know what I find incredibly funny, white men who think their opinion is relevant.

Might not make sense to you, but it might to someone else.

I am always surprised seeing people asking “why?” at changes they see in public spaces that are made to increase accessibility.

Check your ableism, lads.

Illustration of a cover for THE HOBBIT. View from inside the halls of the woodland elves. A ramp is dropping some barrels. The trees make a circle. In the trees are some elves and spiders. Inside the circle from the bottom is a river flowing through forest. Barrels in the river. The river joins a lake with a floating town, above it the Lonely Mountain, with its reflection/shadow over the town. This will be a riso print.

The Vaster Wilds - Lauren Groff

A young woman, enslaved to a rich English family travels with them to early American, where she flees the starving settlement and forges her survival in the wilderness. Engrossing, alive and profound.

If you like books about women and deep solitude, this is for you.
