Can't say I will recommend this book to some one. But I'm hooked to the professor David Kepesh and will be reading the next book that stars him, The Dying Animal. Roth's writing is a pleasure to read as always. #PhilipRoth

There's the American Jewish childhood, debauchery in Europe, a failed marriage, loss of libido and gaining it back. Some of it was tiring. I liked the literary musings more than the erotic musings in the novel. The dream about meeting Kafka's whore was funny. There was a lot of Chekov. 2/
In a book swap I picked The Professor of Desire by Philip Roth. My first Roth novel. (Of course I knew about Roth, but never got around to reading him). Story of a man's struggle with his over enthusiastic libido and him coming to terms with it. He happens to become an academic 1/

I guess no one is here, so I can post in this remote corner.

..I muse and muse myself to sadness,
Once more I pour my wine, and singing aloud,
Await the bright moonrise.
My song is ended--
What troubled my soul?--I remember not"
From my favourite Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai, 8th century. Translated by Shigeyoshi Obata. 2/2
"Life is an immense dream. Why toil?
All day long I drowse with wine
And lie by the post at the front door.
Awakening,I gaze upon the garden trees
And, hark, a bird is singing among the flowers.
Pray, what season may this be?
Ah, the songster's a mango-bird
Singing to the passing wind of spring.

Paperback copies of 2 novels 'Days at the Morisaki bookshop' & 'More days at the Morisaki bookshop'
Picked 'Days at the Morisaki Bookshop' and it's sequel for light year end reading. It was a fun pleasant read, nice way to end the year. Liked the books discourse more than the plot. Simple feel good books. In a dream like second hand bookstore setting.
We didn't discuss that. But thinking now, true. Ending with the absurdity of life.

Thinking “he won’t go” I was aloof;
thinking “she won’t agree” he was aloof too;
our big egos led us to bicker then;
my pained heart wallows in misery now,
as if from a Cobra’s sting. 4/
Placeholder lyrics he originally wrote
'Scrambled Eggs
Oh my baby how I love your legs'
After having a chuckle, I read the lyrics of the song. This stanza particularly resonated
'Why she had to go I don't know, she wouldn't say
I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday' 3/
Considered the most successful song ever (in terms of no of covers), the tune came to Paul McCartney in his sleep.He woke up and wrote place holder lyrics for the tune. Later he wrote it into his greatest song.
Final version
Yesterday
All my troubles seemed so far away 2/
I grew up in deep south of TN and my music knowlwdge starts and ends with Tamil film music. So Beatles to Michael Jackson to Freddie Mercury are all just quizzing answers to me.
So it was only today I learned of the place holder lyrics for 'Yesterday' by Paul McCartney. 1/
Forgetfulness The name of the author is the first to go followed obediently by the title, the plot, the heartbreaking conclusion, the entire novel which suddenly becomes one you have never read, never even heard of, as if, one by one, the memories you used to harbor decided to retire to the southern hemisphere of the brain, to a little fishing village where there are no phones. Long ago you kissed the names of the nine Muses goodbye and watched the quadratic equation pack its bag, and even now as you memorize the order of the planets, something else is slipping away, a state flower perhaps, the address of an uncle, the capital of Paraguay. Whatever it is you are struggling to remember, it is not poised on the tip of your tongue, not even lurking in some obscure corner of your spleen. It has floated away down a dark mythological river whose name begins with an L as far as you can recall, well on your own way to oblivion where you will join those who have even forgotten how to swim and how to ride a bicycle. No wonder you rise in the middle of the night to look up the date of a famous battle in a book on war. No wonder the moon in the window seems to have drifted out of a love poem that you used to know by heart. Billy Collins
